Driveshaft Bearing

Hello all - there is lots of play between my driveshaft and the bearing - seems to be the reason for a slight hesitation when I step on it. Anyone out there replace one of these lately? Any advice appreciated.

Re: Driveshaft Bearing

yes its bad, just pull the shaft and put on a new one. a press and bearing separator is really handy. if not cut away the housing and rubber insulator. remove the outer race and then and hammer and large chisel will remove the rest.

Re: Driveshaft Bearing

Be sure to mark both driveshaft sections and reassemble in the same orientation to prevent balance problems.

Re: Driveshaft Bearing

I had a heck of a time getting the old carrier bearing off. I took it to a local driveline shop. He took off the old carrier bearing which was thrashed. He went to press on the new bearing & the shaft that the bearing rode on was cracked. After waiting several days to get the new part which he said had to be ordered out of Southern California, he reinstalled the carrier bearing, I had one really bad u-joint, one that he said was marginal & one that was ok. I just had him replace all three. Between the carrier bearing, new carrier shaft, u joints & balancing the shaft, I was in it over $300. Ouch! It should be good to go for a long while. Hopefully, you can get the carrier bearing off more easily than me & get it replaced. If not, it might be worth checking with a driveline shop if you have one locally.

Re: Driveshaft Bearing

I wonder why the carrier bearing wore so quickly. That one doesn't look too old

I have a brand new carrier with billet housing still in the box if your interested in it. Never been installed. I'll take $90.00 shipped.

After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

Re: Driveshaft Bearing

30 years ago I had a 70 c10. I put 3 carrier bearings in it before I polished up and greased the yolk. Then I didnt put another one in.

Re: Driveshaft Bearing

An out of balanced drive shaft will take these out pretty fast.
