Need info on apache 40

Just bought a 1960 apache 40 dump truck for $600. Has a 235 4 speed. 12ft box. I am having a hard time finding info on this truck. I am looking for any info and any info on parts that were also used on different models. If anyone has and info or a good site it would be greatly appreciated.thanks

Stovebolt.com

Go to, Forums / Big Bolts, introduce yourself and your truck.

Read the Manual.

Also, look for the 'heavy haulers' area of this forum.

Good luck,

Neat truck! Very few 40 series trucks left. AFAIK, the body panels are all the same as 10-30 series trucks, and the frame and suspension (or most of it) is specific to the 40 series.

Re: Need info on apache 40

I have read the manual, I have the general info. I am more less wanting to know what kind of front end I could put in to get disk brakes, and also what rear axle I could put in to get a highway gear. All with minimal mods. Really hoping to find a build thread on one lol.

Re: Need info on apache 40

A late(r) model 3500HD would probably be be cheapest/easiest thing if you want to retain the extra HD capability over a normal 1 ton (straight axle on all of those I think, though). Not sure about the possibility of bolting on C30 stuff with the C40 frame.

Some extra info if you haven't seen it: https://gmheritagecenter.com/docs/gm...olet-Truck.pdf

Re: Need info on apache 40

Congrats on the 40 series....as mentioned, they are not commonly seen. We'd love some pictures.

Heres a few pics of a nice 1961 40 series truck that was for sale here in NC last year. I would have loved to gotten it, but the $ just wasn't there at the time.

Re: Need info on apache 40

What range of year do you mean by later model hd axle? Hopefully next weekend we will head to the jy and see what we can find. Might be interested in throwing in a 350. I really wanna do a minor restoration on it, but my dad just wants to leave it so we will see. I'll try and put a couple pictures up but I'm not very good with computers. It's nothing special but for 600 bucks I love it

There are a couple threads talking about them; apparently they were 1991 to 2002? I'm not really sure what the swap would be like, but they are the more modern equivalent to the old 40 series stuff if you want to keep it similarly sized/rated. It will certainly require a little bit of fab work--not a "bolt-in" type of deal.

You might want to look at using regular C30 (one ton) '71-'87 stuff if you aren't really planning on using the extra capacity. Not sure how that would work with the C40 frame, but it's certainly worth checking out. You could also run 19.5" wheels with that to keep the look of the bigger truck.

I'd consider what you really want out of it before you start with mods, though. What do you plan on doing with it?

Re: Need info on apache 40

Some of the Class B motorhomes were on a 1-1/4 ton chassis, which had a heavier rear differential as well as front suspension and braking. I'm not sure about your area, but here, you can find old ratty motor homes for next to nothing.

Re: Need info on apache 40

Ya we looked at a couple motor homes today at the jy. We are phoning tomorrow to see what we can get. Seems to be the best option. We are not going to be hauling lots with it. At times I'm sure we will but it's mostly for running garbage to the dump and getting lumber and supplies from town. That's why the rear axle is number 1.

Re: Need info on apache 40

Parked the truck for winter I found a few axles but none will keep the original 10 lug rims and I would like to keep the back the same as the front. Anyone have any knowledge of such wheel adapters so I can use a different rear axle but use the original 10 lug rims? Any help is greatly appreciated thanks

Re: Need info on apache 40

I don't know if you can get them with the correct 10 lug stud pattern for your application, but 8 lug to 10 lug wheel adapters are quite common. A lot of guys with the 8 lug diesel trucks run aluminum semi wheels with the adapters.

Re: Need info on apache 40

What about an easy way to change the rear axle out to a better running gear, whatever bolt pattern it maybe be aslong as I can do something with the front so they match? And something that's easy to find 18 or 19 inch rims for?

Re: Need info on apache 40

I have never had my hands on a C40, but I don't see why the front suspension from a '73-'86 C30 or a '87-'91 R3500 wouldn't work just as it does on the '60-'66 C10,20 and 30's. The differential from the same will be a fairly easy swap. It would be either a Dana 70 or a 14 bolt. This will give you the 8 x 6.5" wheel stud pattern.

As Woogeroo mentioned, check in over at the "Heavy Haulers" section of this forum,
here:

There are guys there that are working on the medium duty trucks, like this C50:
