Hood Rockets on Ebay

Any one seen these? Bidding on them? I would kill for a set of these but I'm not going to bid this time as I am getting ready to start another upgrade to my truck and would rather hold on to the money for that. Eventually I'll score a set but not this time. I'm still hoping that someone will start repopping them.

Re: Hood Rockets on Ebay

Someone wants them a lot more than I ever would if I had another 57.

That's a lot of coin to pay for trinkets to clutter up your truck.

Ya know as much as these things sell for when they turn up you'd think someone would repop them again. I don't know what the deal was with the last outfit that reproduced them was or why they stopped making them but it couldn't have been because of demand...there's plenty of that.

Re: Hood Rockets on Ebay

I think repos were available in the mid '90s? I'm sure they were in one of my catalogs when I built my truck.

Ahhh... yes. They seem to be available.

Re: Hood Rockets on Ebay

Hey Russell,
Thought i would chime in. I searched for a long time for a pair of rockets. No one repops them now, only ones that come up are vintage ones and a very rare NOS set. I have seen them go for over 500 for a perfect set, but never below 300.

I almost bought some on several occasions, but resisted. I took a chance on hood rocket from a 1958 olds 88. Looks very similar and fits fery well, only for the most careful eye can a difference be noticed.
I can post a pic or two if you want .

Re: Hood Rockets on Ebay

I guess I will never come to terms with this H.O.G. mentality transferred to cars and trucks where bolting on every available chrome trinket is considered cool rather than cluttered.
One of my high school friends, his dad and his maternal grandfather before him sold Chevrolet cars and trucks here in town for over 50 years and outside of the 46,47,48 cars that often were loaded with trinkets to raise the selling price you didn't see very much extra added on chrome on anything they sold new. I doubt if Tim's grandfather ever sold a 57 truck with those chrome bullets as I have never seen one in this area with them.

Re: Hood Rockets on Ebay

Mr48, it's a nostalgia thing for me. I was a teenager in the mid fifties and worked at a Pure Oil service station at the time. It was fashionable back then to add accessories like continental kits, dual antennas, mirrors, spinner hubcaps, and most any other piece of chrome that was available. I want every piece of chrome trim that was available for my truck because I want it to look like I would have done it back then if I had had the money.

Classic Industries has been out of stock on the rockets for a good while. I added my name to a waiting list at The Filling Station but haven't heard anything from them, and doubt I ever will.

The Olds hood rockets look great but even those are hard to find at a decent price and in good condition.

Re: Hood Rockets on Ebay

Regional I guess then. It just wasn't popular around here with main stream car guys at that time. There were always a few older as in WAY older guys who thought that any chrome doo dad that Western Auto sold was great right along with the curb feelers and Buick portholes.

As for myself, I've always subscribed to the concept that less is more and that most rigs look a lot better with a minimum of add on pieces Such as hood ornaments, portholes or vents or scoops that don't serve an actual purpose. Factory pieces that every vehicle of that particular model are ok though. I plan to leave the stock hood ornament on the front of my hood after I section the truck as I think removing it leaves too much blank space there.

Hey, Buick portholes are awesome...on Buicks.

Depending on the build, on an AD truck, curb feelers, visors, amber fog lights, hood ornament and those stainless dress-up pieces for the fenders.
What can I say? My wife is half Mexican and I've been hanging around her family for 38 years. Won't ever do dingle balls, though, no matter what.
Maybe a raccoon tail on the antenna?

Crow, you are funny!
I was raised in So Cal during the 50s-60s, so dingle balls and Pep Boys garnish were the standard fare, but not for me.
I just bought the Cornwall tires!

Re: Hood Rockets on Ebay

My wife's cousin lived in Fontana. He used to make money making faux convertibles out of 51-54 Bel-Aire's and such.
My favorite car of his was a '64 Impala convertible on bags. He could lay the rockers right on the pavement, or raise it up high enough to change the oil without ramps or stands.

You don't need to "come to terms" with it. If you don't like it, don't do it to your ride. It's not your place to "come to terms" with what others do to THEIR rides. Personally, I think anything bagged and slammed looks ridiculous. What that means is that I will never own anything bagged and slammed. Others that like that, I'm happy for them because they are enjoying their ride. My trucks are here to please me, nobody else. You must be a Liberal because a Conservative says "I don't like it so I won't do it". A Liberal says "I don't like it so you can't do it".
