Re: Anybody ever recondition a shift knob?

On my Willys I screwed in a bolt with the head cut off with the right threads for the knob. The I put that in my drill press and used fine sandpaper followed by polishing compound. Came up just like new, repaint the shift pattern and your done.

Pretty much did the same as Kennuck. Cut the head off a bolt, welded to a piece of tubing and threaded it into the knob, used a buffing wheel, turned out pretty nice.

Re: Anybody ever recondition a shift knob?

Yep, the trick part is to get it chucked into a drill. Then you set a piece of wet sandpaper in a couple of rags and run the drill if you need to get out some serious scratches.

I did my auto shift knob that way, stepped through the grits to about 1500, shot it with clearcoat. HOWEVER you are dealing with depressed (engraved) gear position indicators that limit your ability to knock down the surface without obscuring the letters, so you need to be way less aggressive than I was.
