Convert auto steering column to manual?

I'm finding a lot of info for switching manual to auto, but not visa versa. Already swapped in a sm465 and would like to reuse my column but not sure what or how to remove linkage, etc, and how the whole neutral saftey switch deal would work. Any tips or experience? Thanks!

Re: Convert auto steering column to manual?

I have a van tilt that had the shifter pin wollowed out so I ground off the hump left when I removed the shifter arm and filled it with short hair fiber strand. then sanded it smooth. the holes left by the gear indicator I welded up and ground down and the filled the rough areas with body filler sanded smooth and then sprayed 3 coats of high build primer on the whole column. Now where the shifter arm came out at the bottom I put in the park position and tacked welded the arm to the column body so that it could not move ever again. After that little while of fun I have a almost factory appearing floor shift tilt column. Since the shifter pin was messed up I bought the column for like $30 bucks and maybe spent 2 hours working it over to the point of having it in final prime, until it got dropped[opps] So it is just a little redo on some filler and reprime no biggie. It does look good though and I will enjoy it. Jim

Great tip about welding the shifter arm. I'll do that.

Most def, you wouldn't want that thing slipping down but I guess if you didn't have the switch on it, it won't harm anything. Just something I thought should have been done. Jim
