307/2bbl throttle linkage

I was checking out my truck tonight and the throttle linkage just didn't look right to me. Originally the rod was connected to the top hole on the carb, but it seems to fit better in the hole I moved it to in the picture below. Which one is correct?

No 307 guys out there? I am also looking for a source on a bushing. I'm sure there should be one between the linkage and the carb to act as a smooth surface and tighten things up a bit

It should be in the top hole. You may not be able to get wide open throttle in that position. Also is there an adjustment on the other end of the rod. It is usually on the end at the carb. Hope this helps.

I appreciate your input. I don't know which way is correct, hence my question. Now I need to find the bushing or sleeve that goes between rod and the carb

I'm not saying mine is correct, its just where it was. There is a lot of grease and dirt around that bottom hole from years of it being there also, thats why I assume its correct..

my 66,000 mile '69 short step is almost all original, and I guess it could have been put in the wrong hole at some point, but it is hooked to the upper hole.

You might be able to get the bushing at an auto parts store on one of those stand up racks that has a lot of old type misc. parts.

I know that the Napa, Car-Quest and AutoZone stores around here have them.

That's what I'm thinking. I'll probably pull out my calipers and make a few measurements and head to the parts store

heres another supposedly barn find low mile untouched truck I just spotted on e-bay showing throttle linkage in lower hole. My bottom hole is a tight fit for the linkage, yours needs a bushing? might be a universal replacement carb...

Thanks Hamjet. I'm assuming it needs a bushing because points of contact such as that typically have a bushing or sleeve to help minimize long term wear. My linkage isn't tight in either hole, but it fits much better in the bottom hole. These are 40 year old parts, so I don't expect it to be perfect.

How is your throttle response?

The linkage being in the lower hole will have a more sensitive feel then the upper hole. I.E. quicker throttle response.

Have you tried switching to the upper hole to see if it is better or worse to your liking?

You might want to try it or just purchase a bushing for that hole also so it can be switched at a later time if desired.

I haven't had a chance to drive it yet. It was super sloppy in the top hole, so I a hoping it will be a little better.

Took it for a drive and things are much better. I can't say it was all in the rod position, but it's much better. Based on Hamjets photo, I also adjusted the spring retainer bolted to the coil bracket. Mine was bent down and touch the manifold. I think this helped alleviate a binding issue I had. Before today, I would have to reach down and pull the accelerator toward me in order for the rpms to drop an additional 2-300 rpm to idle. Now it falls back to 750 every time.

I was also having an issue with off idle hesitation. I remembered when I rebuilt the carb that there was a piece of sheet metal between the float and the power valve chamber. I thought it was odd and upon inspection last night, I think it was preventing fuel from entering the power valve chamber. I looked at the drawing from the rebuild kit and all of the drawings I could find on the internet and nowhere could I find this piece of sheet metal.

It still isn't perfect, but for an underpowered 307 (the crappy 1972 version), a 3ott, and 3.08 gears, it's running way better than I expected.

Glad its working better. Are you sure its 3.08 gears? unless stipulated on the spid, I think 307s with 3 OTT came with 3.73s..

It should have come with 3.73. According to the po, they swapped it for an auto rearend (3.08). I verified by putting the rear in te air and spinning/counting the number of tire rotations to driveshaft rotations. I'm sure most of us could attest to the great number of should haves versus actualities on these 40 year old vehicles.

Is it 5 lug now? I'm swapping my 6 lug narrow rear for a later 5 lug rear. It has 3.07 in it but I'll swap my 3.73 (posi! one of the few options my truck has.) into that housing. My truck is a leaf so doing a flip kit. Will wait on gear swap to make sure my wheels and tires fit...

Nope. It's a 6 lug, but I'm fine with that.

I checked mine today on my 69 307. It was in the top hole. It feels tight and looks like it hasn't been removed, but I have no idea if its correct. Maybe I should go make sure it actually goes WOT when I floor the pedal.
