New member, new/old 64 short step

Hello All,

New to the forum, thanks everyone for the wealth of information. Somewhat overwhelming at times but have spent hours learning from your experience.

I've purchased a 64 chevy custom cab shortbed stepside, mostly stock with a 230 I6 and 3 on the tree. It has welfare springs on the front and stock springs on the back. Best thing about this truck is almost no rust! Motor can be stubborn to start at times but runs strong.

First order of business is getting front disks installed and upgrading the suspension, as well as fixing/replacing original wiring harness. Also need to either rebuild column shifter or add floor shift.

Any additional insights, advice, or ideas would be helpful and appreciated.

Thanks.

That DS door mirror looks like it has an off-center pivot. Those are rather valuable, if that's what you have. Really nice truck.

Drive it a while before you change too much. That will help you focus on the things that matter most. Helps you appreciate the upgrades more too. I have an anti-sway bar for the front of my truck but I'm gonna drive it a while without it so I will actually be able to appreciate the difference it will make after I install it. Haha!

Nice start. When you do your disk upgrade, if you're changing to 5-lug, don't toss those poverty caps. I case you didn't know, those things are worth their weight in gold.

cool truck, I have one the same year / model. Having a non-rusty truck to start wth is a real bonus. Also planning a disc brake upgrade on the front of mine so will be interested to see how you get on.

Re: New member, new/old 64 short step

Thanks all,

Thinking of going with the CPP grand slam kit and busting out the front brakes and shocks/springs in one go round. Then probably going to throw in a floor shifter for now, as I may change drivetrain in the future, but I need to stop and shift for the time being.
