what's it worth?
A guy is selling a used sm 465 paired with an np205 and a 14 bolt full float rear with a Detroit locker. All used but all in good working condition according to him. What should I pay for all this?

Re: what's it worth?
The tranny and transfer case go for $400 fast in my area.
The 14 bolt with locker probably $500-750 realistically. I sold 2 full floaters for $200, and had practically had people lining up. With one for $100 that the brakes were locked up with on. |

Re: what's it worth?
Around here, the SM465/NP205 combo goes regularly for $200-300, sometimes as cheap as $150. A 14bFF with an actual Detroit sells for $400-500, open 14bFFs are $100-150 and 14bFFs with Gov-bombs are $50-100.
I sell this stuff pretty often as a scrapper.

Re: what's it worth?
Its a real detroit. Made the guy send me pics inside the carrier windows and made him send me pics of all 4 cross pin holes marked. Was not gonna drive an hour to see a gov bomb. Thanks for the help guys! Don't really need the tranny or tcase but its a package deal.

Re: what's it worth?
The old set-ups don't sell as easy as the finer spline. I agree with Redcap on value in my area, too. The rear is worth $500 max...about what the locker would cost. The rear is dime a dozen and the value in the used locker is in no need to install. Or, you could look at it like $200 for rear and $300 more because it's a Detroit. I recently sold an open 14-bolt for $200. What was he asking? I've seen prices jump lately, but I have three Detroit Lockers, aka No-Spins, for the HO52 and $125 is the most I paid. The one complete rear I got for $100. You'll have a little work to put that 14-bolt in, but not bad. I guess $700 wouldn't be too bad.

Re: what's it worth?
Well I already have 14 bolt under my truck but its a gov bomb.. almost thinking itd be easier just to swap the innerds rather than swapping the whole axle

Re: what's it worth?
Heck no. Change the axle. Besides, you have a good thing to sell. The Gov Loc is a good unit for what it was designed for and if used correctly. You just have to understand how they work. Someone would pay a few hundred for that. For any (most really) the Detroit Locker is over kill and/or not suited well for their use. I'm a locker guy from way way back, but I've had the Gov Loc equipped trucks, never blew one, and would take one over an open rear any day. You have to know how to use a Detroit Locker, too. They can get you in bad shape if you don't watch it. And, if you don't want to eat tires on the street you have to know the "technique".

Re: what's it worth?
A Detroit is not as civilized in a DD as a Gov lock is, I have driven both for years and prefer the gov for a DD.

Re: what's it worth?
It is WAY easier to swap the axles. Takes a couple hours.

Re: what's it worth?
the last 465/205 combo i bought was 700$. it also came with a d60/14ff and the rest of the k30. personally i dont see much value in a 465/205. i would buy them if i needed them, in good shape for 300 maybe. i have several laying around in the way though. a later model 465/205 is worth maybe 500. 14ff depends on the axle you are looking at. but i agree with the prices listed. i dont know if i would buy a detroit rear for 500 unless it was a sure thing, no perch mods no gearing changes, good brakes, and i wanted a detroit. depending on the planned use, i dont know as i would consider a detroit as a positive. i have one in my jeep and will treasure the day i can replace it with an arb. i have had gov-locs in a few 14ff and never had a single issue. even being mean to them. i would rather have that in a truck that will be on the street any decent amount of time. detroits are so aggravating. i hate the fact that my jeeps wanders the lane simply based on shifting or accel/decel. once the detroit settles in it will track great, but shifting or going around curves it looks like i suck. it also ratchets and bangs and sounds like hell. i do like it when i am on the trail though. never have to think about it. it just works.
depending on your workspace, changing the carrier and detroit with the gov lock should be pretty easy. i would rather do that than swap axles in my driveway with a floor jack. pinion depth is set, you should be able to do the swap with only having to adjust the backlash, and any idiot can do that on a 14bolt. if i had a lift and a decent array of tools at my disposal, i agree with redcap. in and out with the axles is pretty quick and painless. it would also depend on what condition the brakes are in your axles and if you need to adjust the perches to fit. |

Re: what's it worth?
Here a 465/205 goes for 25 cents a pound. Otherwise they make good wheel chocks. Same for a 14 bolt. Detroit go for retail used or new.
