3/4 Ton (Dana 60) Disc Brakes
I am working on a way to retrofit disc brakes on my '71 3/4 ton GMC LWB. I have a pair of 13" x 1" thick ventilated, slotted rotors that are a perfect fit on the back side of the hub. The vertical space between the brake flange and the backs of the rotors measures 15/16".
I am currently not sure what application they were intended for, but they look like a good start. Does anybody have any good ideas about what calipers would work best? I can fabricate brackets to mount the calipers. Any suggestions will be appreciated. |

I would first determine exactly what rotors you have before welding caliper brackets onto your axle to fit unknown rotors - what happens if you have to replace a rotor ? In any case, I believe you'll need 17" wheels to clear a 13" rotor, unless the late model dual piston aluminum calipers are lower profile than the older single piston cast iron calipers. Several choices in late model rear truck calipers (GM, Ford, Dodge), but the aftermarket weld-on brackets are mostly available for the standard 7" (between the) pins distance that all the cast iron GM calipers used. Whatchya gonna do for a emergency/parking brake ?

I found out that the rotors I have are for a '95 F350 4wd front axle.
I should have a caliper (single piston) that has about 70 to 80% of the front piston area to balance the braking force, front to rear, since the rotors would be the same diameter front and rear (yes, the front OEM rotors are 13" diameter and I have 16" OEM wheels), so I should probably use something that is intended for use on the rear. The disc thickness is 1-3/16" I have the park brake covered as my long shaft NV4500 is set up for a driveline brake. I still have the brake itself but did not need it when I upgraded to the 5 speed. I will have to find a cable to connect the park brake pedal to it. |

I am working on a setup for that type axle using late 2008 model GM parts. your truck has the 7 bolt brake plate right? Will be in the testing phase hopefully this summer and see how it works out then start making the adapter plates if all goes well next fall.
