You can trim the tails off so they are flush. Usually when the tails brakes off long you are using a grip length to long. I use an all aluminum rivet/tail type that is kind of short, just enough length to work. These wing window seals don't need to much clamping force from the rivet or it will distort. An old Fart glass guy (my uncle Joe) showed me this trick, he also glues the seal in place (carefully) then rivets it after so it will stay in place .This assists the rivets in holding seal and makes it easier to assemble by yourself.
