Starter shiming

I put a new flywheel in my 69 chevy 350 c10.

I am putting in a mini torque starter. Everything I have done for shinning the pinion hits the flywheel. If I get the pinion in the flywheel it slides back and forth easily until I pop it completely out. Once I do what it back to nicking the flywheel again. Any suggestion would be appreciated
Thanks

Re: Starter shiming

Are you sure you need to shim it? I recently put a new AC Delco "mini" starter and flexplate in my Nova and the directions said to use no shims with this type of starter. It works great.

Re: Starter shiming

If I do not use any shims the pinion will hit the flywheel when I manually pull out the starter pinion

Re: Starter shiming

Do you have a mismatched flywheel to starter?

Re: Starter shiming

Did you check the new flex plate with the old one to be sure they are the same size before you installed it?

Pertaining to your other thread,
Once you have that figured out, make a bracket to hold the back of the starter up. Also, how do you plan on fixing the crack in the starter hole? That needs to be fixed or you will probably keep having these issues with the starter.

Re: Starter shiming

Everything matches. The pinion just nics the flywheel

I had the same problem with a 'mini starter' from summit racing. It was described as 'compatible' with aboth 153 and 168 tooth flexplates but these starters will only work with a 153 tooth flexplate. A call to the Summit tech line and they agreed thet there was an 'issue' with those starters and agreed to swap out that starter for one with an 11 tooth pinion if I would pay the $30.00 difference in cost. The new one arrived the next day and worked like a champ.

I learned a lesson from that. 9 tooth starter pinion on a 153 tooth flexplate and an 11 tooth pinion on a 168 tooth flexplate; NO EXCEPTIONS unless you want to spend a week or two trying to get one to work and then damage the teeth on the flexplate and have to change that too!
