Question Are you supposed to lube the speedometer cable??

If so, with what? Oil? White lithium grease?

I put in a new one and the thing squeals a little.

Help! Thanks in advance!

I have used white lithium grease on mine, but it's been pointed out that it may be too heavy, especially in colder weather. Graphite powder should be the right stuff.

How exactly do you lube the cable (some step-by-step insturctions would be great).

Mine is clattering and chatting away and sounds like crap. Plus it keeps falling off the back of my speedometer (slip-on connetion, which i am told never came in these trucks but mine has it). It may be the speedometer itself though, the odometer is fubar.

I've always taken mine out to lube them. I use liquid graphite, it has graphite powder suspended in some sort of solvent. I've never felt comfortable just shooting it down the housing, you'd think some of the solvent would make it into the transmission eventually.

Thanks - I just got back on the board - I knew I pulled the cable out, but it's been so long since I lubed it, I forgot which way it came out!

yellow72custom, I think the 72 trucks came with the cable that has the white plastic clip on retainer. I know I have come across it in the past.
