So what are you doing for a gas tank?

Hi Everybody

Been tinkering away on my low buck farm truck, so last night I took out the old original 1953 Chevy gas tank from behind the seat....kinda not really liking that whole set up at all. I have had a Willys Jeep and you literally would sit right on top of the fuel tank....made me nervous everytime I drove it....always smelled like gas inside the cab too...not really a user friendly setting at all...

So what are guys using for gas tanks? and where are you locating them?

Anybody want to post a couple pictures I would love to see them...

Thanks in advance.

Re: So what are you doing for a gas tank?

Good post. I would be interested in that myself. Mine has a new gas tank but it is mounted as the original behind the seat. I wanted to keep it as original as possible but also don't like the smell and am thinking of moving it under the bed. Would be very interested in some other folks ideas, mods, and pics as well.

Re: So what are you doing for a gas tank?

i am also planning on relocating my gas tank.....
new tanks out of a catalog like LMC are big bucks..probably run you $600+ in parts.

an inexpensive route is to find a fuel tank from a mid 1960s mustang, or buy a new one on the internet for under $100.00. if youre going to use an aftermarket fuel gauge, this might be your best bet. the ford sender wont work with the stock gauge. also, the feed line for the tank is on the bottom of the mustang tanks.

im going with what i think is a good deal from Tanks Inc. its a mustang style tank with the feed line on top and sender that will work with my stock gauge. im getting the whole kit delivered to my door for $337.00.

im attaching a link here to their page with tanks for your truck. good luck!

Seems a little expensive compared to tanks inc. not sure about his claim that a tank mounted behind the rear end is dangerous.

As far as fuel level I'm going to be using aftermarket gauges

Safe to assume the '83 blazer sender isn't compatible with the stock '57 gauge?

I honestly have no clue I know that it works off of ohms if your 12 volts but they're not the same ohms range you may be able to figure it out and use a resistor in line or something

Here it says the sending unit is 0 ohms empty and 90 ohms full so thats half the equation

Re: So what are you doing for a gas tank?

I know nothing about the blazer tank. I'm running a Mustang tank, though, and here are my thoughts:
It's $100.
To make it work, you have to remove the rear crossmember that holds the frame in place from the twisting forces of the leaf spring hangers. You'll want to tack weld a bar across the frame before you remove this cross member or it's a PITA to reinstall it.
You also have to remove ~3/8" of steel from the bottom of the frame rails, lenghtwise with the rail, to make the tank work.
The flange of the tank won't sit flat on the bottom of the frame because the frame isn't flat - it's got leaf spring hangers.
It's a pretty substantial PITA to make all of this happen with the bed on the truck (then, mine was collapsed at the time I was doing the tank)
By the time I was done screwing around with all of this, I really wished I had just spend the $400 or whatever for a custom fit tank that wasn't making me hack at my frame to fit the darned thing.
I just didn't know any of that when I walked into the situation.
HTH.

1964 and older are 30 ohm. 1965 and newer are 90 ohms. If you used a 83 sender for stock 57 gauges you would need a converter. They cost about $145.

To eliminate the obstacles you mentioned use a 1 inch square tube frame that goes around the tank. drill holes to fit over the rivets, mount the frame work to the underside of the rail and then mount the tank to the under side of the rail. It only makes it an 1 inch lower and you keep the spring perch support in place.

Re: So what are you doing for a gas tank?

There are a few more options since you do not want to mount it in the cab either under the seat or behind the seat. I do not even thing under the seat would even be an option.

I chose to have mine tank cleaned and tested and kept it behind the seat.

I did not want to put it in the bed or under the bed by the spare tire holder because I would lose the spare tire holder and my tire does not mount on the side of the bed. I found an option of using an 55.2 - 59 task force panel that mounts under the passengers side frame rail. This way you can keep the tire holder and run dual pipes if its a inline 6 and get it out of the cab. You can search that here I believe that's where I got the idea from. The only problem the panel truck gas tanks are had to come by that are in decent shape.
