Alternator position

As I look at pics other member's trucks, I notice that the vast majority have the alternator on the driver's side, regardless of whether they have A/C. Mine ('72 GMC)has it on the passenger side (Non A/C, w/ps). Was there any particular reason why they would be on one side or the other?

They changed from short water pump to long pump in 1973 on trucks and cars in 1968. The alternator went to passenger side with the long pump.

I agree. The brackets you have are most likely 73+. When those were equipped with ac the hoses ran over everything in a long needless run. I have the passenger brackets and I'm looking to shift mine to the drivers side. The options get slim with a lwp but they're out there.
