I would have taken them off too. Now you can blast and paint them up real nice.
Look at this way, no aftermarket stuff has heat shields. That's unless you get that stuff to wrap them and pretty much everyone says don't waste you time with that.

Roger i did cut off the Smog stuff off the top of the Pipes and my game plan
is to weld up the small holes and die grind them and smooth the welds out
and had thought even of ceramic coating them. Not sure yet or maybe just paint.
But i think they will look really good once they are cleaned up!
Thanks again for all your Great Advice Buddy!

Re: L98 TPI any suggestions?

Ole Sarge has finally completed the clean up of my 5.7 TPI out of the 87 IROC I had way back when. The question is what can we use to connect the exhaust manifold to the exhaust? We don't have the flanged connectors that would house the O2 sensors?

I bought a set of these for mine:

These will flow better than the stock manifolds. Probably as good as shorty headers.
Standard header collectors will bolt to them.

Re: L98 TPI any suggestions?

There are 18mm O2 sensor bungs available through parts stores that can be welded into the exhaust to house the O2 sensor so any piece of pipe could be made to work. An exhaust shop will likely have the tools to turn a piece of pipe into a flanged end. The IROC manifolds don't flow that well so a set of ram's horns like pictured above or even shortie headers would likely be an improvement. You'll get arguments for or against using a heated O2 sensor. In my experience if the sensor is installed within 12" of the manifolds it's usually fine. I had mine in roughly the same spot as Roger's until I installed the headers.

Hmmm.... I don't see an oil fill hole in those valve covers. Maybe it's just the photo angles?

Thanks for info. And yes it must be the angles for the filler hole.
