Strange plastic(?) shavings in fuel filter - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Hey guys, I had some problems with my engine and decided to pull it. After taking off the fuel line and checking the filter, i noticed these weird shavings inside the filter. They aren't magnetic..so at least they aren't steel, but they look like plastic. Anyone have any clue where the hell this could have come from? I haven't had a chance yet to take a look at the carb to see if they're in there.

Might be a hose somewhere in the system that isn't fuel rated. It usually crumbles from the inside sending little black particles towards the carb.

hrmm..well there's only one small hose that goes from the tank to the metal fuel line. I'll be sure to check it for damage and the metal line for blockage. You think there might be any of that crap in the tank as well?

Could be anything. Time to pull and flush the tank, lines ect.

Deteriorated strainer sock. Keep changing the filter for a while.

x3. Rubber not rated for fuel gets gummed up and turns to slime. The sock looks like this when it's shot.

I believe that is the disintegrating plastic fish net strainer that is suppose to be at the end of the pickup tube in the gas tank to keep the bigger particles from being sucked up into the gas line. They tend to disintegrate after 40 years or so. Pull the pickup tube and see if there is anything at the end of it except a metal washer that use to have the "sock" on it.
