Wheel Studs
Not sure if this is the best place to post this but I'm looking for some help finding longer wheel studs.
Essentially, I need the same Knurl diameter (.565) and Shoulder length (.875) but I need the under-head length 2" or close enough. (1.85-2.1") The stock wheel studs are knurl .565 and shoulder length .875 but the under-head length is 1.75" I can't find anywhere online that has was I'm looking for. The reason I need a longer under-head length is because I'm running a .25" wheel spacer and I'm afraid I wont have enough thread length. Any ideas anybody?

Re: Wheel Studs
I don't mind going to a 1/2" as long as I dont have to drill new holes into the hubs

Re: Wheel Studs
Looks like Dorman 610-130 is your best bet.
Knurl .565 Shoulder 1.063 Length 1.969 The shoulder is longer, will that part fit into the wheel spacer opening? |

Re: Wheel Studs
The knurl might stick out farther than the hub. I'll buy one at the parts store and test it out

Re: Wheel Studs
Ive been through wheel stud hell changing over to 8 lug and getting longer length due to the thick flanges on my aluminum wheels.
Have you seen this link? Under the "wheel lug" section click view chart and it's a sortable excel to look at specs and part numbers. http://www.dormanproducts.com/Pages/hardware/index.aspx |

Re: Wheel Studs
I feel like I'm going through hell right now. I purchased a set of wilwood D52 GM replacement calipers and with the rally wheels I don't have enough clearance. It's too late to return the calipers that I spent $400 on so I'm keen on making this work. I found a .25" spacer which would give me the clearance, I'm only concerned is if I don't i have enough thread length.
Do you know how much thread length I could get away with?

Re: Wheel Studs
Can you clearance the wilwoods with your grinder? How much material would you have to take off? Then repaint them. People in the 4x4 crowd clearance calipers often when running 15" wheels.
Then you don't need spacers or new studs. For how much thread engagement - I've read you need at least the same thread engagement as the width of the stud - so 7/16" in your case. Take the caliper and spacer off and mount the wheel. Look to see/measure how much threads are usable. Then take it off and measure again with the spacer. Or maybe find a way to mark the stud with something so when you screw the lug on you see how far it's engaging. Maybe stock length is ok? |

Re: Wheel Studs
You see the marks on the outer edges here.. Not sure how much I'd need to shave off

Re: Wheel Studs
I gotta say Mike that would be a tempting idea to me. I know I'm running steelies and I tried mine on sans pads...but mine seemed to clear. I can't imagine that it'd be much.

Re: Wheel Studs
That's what I'm thinking. an 1/8" along that radius? Take a little off, test fit, take a little more, test fit. Then repaint the calipers. Does Wilwood sell thouch up paint.

Re: Wheel Studs
I think that's the way to go.. After further research, I don't think I would want to run wheel spacers... I'll take a grinder to it and let you know how it goes. Have to wait until I get the front axle and frame back from powder coat in 1-2 weeks

Re: Wheel Studs
Are the lug nuts covered (can't see them)on your wheel set up? If so, just get the lug nuts that reach in an additional 5/16", that'll give you the extra threads you need. They may only be available as a chrome closed lug nut which is why I asked if you can't see them. Gorrilla makes them but they are available from lower cost sources also.

Re: Wheel Studs
Click on page 6. Part #68078 is an open tapered seat nut that reaches in an extra .300 (almost 5/16") that should work for you with the spacer

Re: Wheel Studs
Tony - are you saying the lug nuts themselves allow further threading past the conical seat area? The gorilla site doesn't really explain the product well.

Re: Wheel Studs
That type of nut will allow for the use of the 1/4" spacer. The threads go down .300". I use them a lot but I don't buy the Gorilla brand but buy them at the swap meet for 50 cents each, the only way to go.

Re: Wheel Studs
Will that lug nut work for thicker flanged wheels and stock wheel studs? IE running a newer style wheel on the OE hub/wheel stud?

Re: Wheel Studs
Where I usually have to use it is with newer aftermarket mags, they seem to have extra thick casting and the original wheel studs are on the short side so those nuts get you about 5-6 more threads to engage, usually gets the job done without changing studs. Anywhere you want more thread engagement. If you need to add a 1/4" spacer those nuts will grab a little more then a 1/4" (.300") so it's like you didn't add the spacers.

Re: Wheel Studs
I believe those lug nuts will work, but I'm still on the fence of using a 1/4" spacer. Would I feel a difference in how it rides?

Re: Wheel Studs
I don't think you'd notice. Most people just don't want to run spacers for safety reasons, but yours are only .25".
Those lug nuts your cheapest way to get running with the calipers you already have. If you don't like it later, you can always change it. |
