Choking Out
Today as I headed down the highway I stepped on the gas into the passing lane and got several repeated hesitations. Felt as if it was loosing fuel or spark. Came off the gas back into the slower lane, truck ran fine the remaining way home?New to the truck, 350 all stock. Point me in the best. Thanks!

Could also be fuel filter getting plugged up.

Will it accelerate if you do it slowly slowly? A bad or leaking accelerator pump can also do that, because it leans out the mixture when you step on it.

Only happens at highway speeds. I can step on it from a stop and she will go (unless cold). When I let off and then step conservatively she will go just fine.

Good start ( and easiest) would be fuel filter... Check the air filter too..

Well, replaced the fuel filter and air filter and the issue came back today but worse. I don't drive the truck daily, recently purchased, drove fine for several weeks, pump was replaced less tan a year ago. Today I hit the highway and she started choking out when I hit 55mph, must slow to around 35 before she would accept the gas pedal without surging, after the first issue she got worse by starting the choking/surging around 35mph, cut out once when I pushed to the floor to see if she would push through it. Limped home around 30 mph without issue. Idles fine, get a slight hesitation from a stop. Stumped here? Hope a smarter person can assist.

Points or HEI dozzy? I fought the same issue with my old points ingition system. Converted it to HEI and the issues went away.

Did you do a full HEI conversion or just a points eliminator kit? What system would you recommend? Also do you need to change the gap of the spark plugs?

Bad plug wire? Bad plug? improperly run/crossed up plug wires? Worth a look
  EDIT: I've got a full HEI that I monkeyed with with that crane cams HEI recurve kit with plugs at .045. Runs so nicely now |

Along with checking/replacing the points, wires, rotor, etc. I am thinking about replacing/overhauling the carburetor. Anyone use National Carburetor or a easy rebuild kits? Two things scare me: transmissions and carburetors.

Oh rebuilding a carb is easy! All you have to do is get a nice clean table and lay everything out in the order you take them off, clean out the bowls and whatnot, check float level, replace all gaskets and the acc. pump plunger and put her all back together! It's really easy. I'd never done one before I did mine and it was way simpler than I ever would have thought before I did it. What kind of carb is it?
