Re: sectioned x member question

if you section, or pancake your x member, you are moving the bottom up in relation to the frame, so the mounts and upper piece stay in their original location, everything else moves up.
check out this thread:http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=543729

not sure about the steering.

It depends on how it sectioned.

Some guys remove material all the way across which doesn't impact the mm towers. Some remove material only from under the rails which does require shortening the mm towers.

No LImits on the R&P kit if going that direction.

Building a small, high rpm engine with the perfect bore, stroke and rod ratio is very impressive.

You can use later 73-87 towers but they will require a small spacer @ the top of the rail or use 63-72 towers. Classic Perf Parts (CPP) & Performance OnLine (POL) also sell tubular style mm towers.

Re: sectioned x member question

If I use a small spacer won't that raise the motor up? Will the 63/72 work with the mounts on the sbc?

Re: sectioned x member question

if you can find some 73-87 2wd 3/4 ton mounts, they are a direct bolt in, no spacer, because the 73-87 3/4 ton 2wd uses the same depth frame rail at the motor mount as a 63-66.
the 1/2 ton 73-87 has a taller frame, so the mounts need a spacer at the top of the frame rail, but regardless of which mount you use as long as the top of your cross member stays in place it won't raise the motor up.

as long as you get v8 63-72 mounts they will work.
which ever mount you end up using you will need the correct vulcanized rubber/steel mount that goes between the tower and the motor.
the rubber part of the mount is different 63-72 vs 73-87.

Re: sectioned x member question

To add to this, the '63-'66 V8 and 230/250 I6 engine mount brackets are the same as the '67-'72 230/250 I6 engine mount brackets. They all bolt up in the rear location. The '67-'72 small block engine mount brackets are shorter and bolt up in the forward location.

When you say mounts, are you referring to the part that bolts to the motor? Parts stores will have motor mounts.

But.... I'm pretty sure they won't have the frame to xmember towers/stands. That's going to require a wrecking yard or classifieds page to source. Not sure if you're seeking both or just one/the other.
