Question What carb to use?

I have a chevy 350 with std. bore, std. crank

300 horse double hump heads w/ 202 valves

COMP CAM 12-239-3
12-239-3 CS X4 262H-11
Lobe separation 111°
Gross valve lift 0.462" Intake @ 0.05
Gross valve lift 0.48" Exhaust @ 0.05
Good low and mid range, excellent response, noticeable idle
RPM operating range 1300-5600

Holley aluminum intake (contender)

I was wondering what Carb you guys thought would work good with this setup. I had a quadrajet on it that came off a 305 and it ran like ****. I'm probably looking at a remanufactured unit due to money reasons, thinking maybe Edelbrock 750 cfm performer series.

It's in an '81 1/2 ton 4x4 Silverado short bed with auto tranny.

Open to any suggestions, and thanks in advance for any help.

Id say 650 would work just fine for a daily driver. 750 is a bit much

I love my edelbrock for reliability purposes. A nice Holly 650 Double pumper would be really nice for that motor though.

It all depends on how your gonna use the truck.

I guess it'll mainly be used for a "work" truck. I won't be making many long trips with it, but still want to keep the gas mileage within reason.

I have an Uncle who has a Holly double pumper I can get fairly reasonably, but I don't like the dang power valve going out any time it backfires.

One reason I said the 750 is because it is cheaper than the 650! How does that make any sense? I assume I would get worse gas mileage with the 750.

I have had good luck with the Edelbrock carbs. I would try to get a 600 or 650 with electric choke. Look at the AFB style carbs rather than the spreadbore types. They are a lot more affordable.

Yeah, I hate the Holleys because they are harder to tune and the power valves.

They are good for drag cars and thats about it. Id get an edelbrock 650 squarebore for milage and reliability purposes.

I would go for the Edelbrocks, especially if you have emissions.

Edelbrock makes a carb specifically for our trucks (795 cfm), but it's about $500.

Is this one better than the other electric choke Edelbrocks?

You can buy a kit to prevent the power valve from blowing

Properly tuned engine shouldnt backfire but it does happen

Id suggest a 600 edelbrock you can get them at any autozone for about 210 manual choke 240 electric choke

The electric choke is calibrated more for mileage

The manual choke is calibrated more for perfomance.

if you plan to run it to 5600 RPMs or so, & dont want to use a Qjet, my pick would be a Demon 625.

I was suggesting the electric choke more so it will start in the mornings over mileage, but that is a good call too. I would bet in a heavy vehicle like a truck, it will probably rarely operate at 5600 RPM. The Edelbrocks are also pretty simple to tune as well.

Yea edelbrocks are kinda hard to beat

Holleys are good if you know how to tune them but alot of people tend to be scared of them They are great perfomers

But IMO edelbrocks are the best for streetability.

I don't have a tach in my truck but if I had to guess I'd say it'd probably never run above 5K, but that's just a guess.

Actually if itll never run past 5KRPMs a 570 Holley would be more than adequete & have great thorattle response. Buddy of mine has one one his 350 in a Suburban. works great. a 600 Edelbrock would be OK to if you prefer those. or a Qjet would be great to. John

Thumbs up

Thanks for all the input guys. I think I'm going to go with a remanufactured 600 cfm Edelbrock. Sounds like that'll be enough for my truck and it's in my price range.

Just in case you're interested;

I'd also say a 650 holley with vacuum secondaries. You could almost certainly get away with the 570cfm Holley Street Avenger.

They only have the Carter in a manual choke configuration. If it doesn't bother you, that is the way to go. The electric choke conversion is 47.00 from Summit. I have the Carter on my 70 Camaro, and it won't start in this weather. A reman Edelbrock is $193 with the electric choke, while a manual choke is $183. A new Carter is $199.
