I'd like to move to a smaller steering wheel, probably a little thicker too. I'm used to driving modern cars, looking for something a little closer to that.

Any suggestions for what wheel and adapter?

I have a Lecarra Mark 9 with a single slot, like in the above pic on my '78.

I really like it...it's been on several different cars of mine since the mid 90's. You have to get a horn button and adapter seperately...I had a big old cool bowtie horn button that didn't work well, so I went back to the little horn button.

I have a momo wheel on a vintage BMW, and those are nice as well.

I have had two cheap Grant wheels, and they sucked. The horn button kept popping off. Grant makes a more expensive line of wheels, but I wasn't willing to try them.

I put an old Camaro steering wheel in mine that I found walking around a swap meet, its 14in diameter, slightly thicker and mounts the same as the original stock 15in wheel using the same hardware and horn parts.

The Camaro one looks nice and the local Pick N Pull just got a couple of them in... I guess I'll snag one. Is it a bolt up?

Yep...bolts up like your stock steering wheel.

I bought a Grant wheel and adapter from summit. I think it was about $120 for both and looks really sharp IMO.

Ya i had a 63 impala Man that was big old thin wheel.

I think it was Jonboy that did the same thing but with a 79 Corvette wheel. IIRC, it's 14" and thicker.

For thickness, I used two of the wide leather-like steering wheel wraps with the thin foam backing - the lace up style. Nice and fat now.

Most any GM wheel from the same era will both right up, SS Monte Carlo is a good option. I put the same one as J Knight on mine.

The 4 spoke 1988-1994 (Pre big ugly airbag) T400 chassis truck steering wheels bolt right on.
If you want a clean custom looking leather wheel that's not screaming "I'm here". The T400 chassis 454SS and maybe some others had that same 4 spoke wheel with leather. I have one on my 76 that I bought for a song. It came to me with split and peeling leather. Dallas custom re-covered it for a pretty reasonable price along with my two fairly rare A1 VW steering wheels but that was over 10 years ago...

I'm a sucker for the Vega GT wheel, that's what we called them back in the day.
Same as J Knight's camaro wheel. I found the horn center piece pops out and a number of other emblems fit there nicely.

I need one.

In the past this is what I used to make the steering wheel thicker and more comfortable and it is also period correct! http://www.ebay.com/itm/64-65-66-67-...a4559b&vxp=mtr --I know cheesy but it works!
