If its low or empty....Check for a hole in the transfer case....pics. This is called "Pump Rub"....The fluid pump rubs a hole in the case....And lets the fluid go. |

Re: Transfer case noise???
How many miles? The transfer case went out in my 04 2500HD at about 60-65 thousand. Same thing heard a horrible grinding noise. Pull the driveshaft, and check for excessive play in the output shaft on transfer case. Shows no signs of going out. No fluid on ground or case.
Pulled my case apart and it was toast. Bearings, c-clips, orings, etc.. all gone.

Re: Transfer case noise???
No hole but fluid was a little low and was very dirty. Truck just flipped 100K miles. Can someone give me the model number of transfer case. It is electric shift.

Re: Transfer case noise???
There is a tag on most GM cases that will say NP---, the tag is gray and red.

Re: Transfer case noise???
Heard from my Mechanic and he drove to a dealership and it has been confirmed my transfer case is shot. I have also found out that nobody can guarantee that it can be rebuilt as the case itself maybe shot. So i am stuck using a remanufactured one in which is in route now. I should get Tuesday or Wedneday and install then. Also i found out GM used 4 different tranfer cases in that year for HD trucks. Also for the record my transfer case number is 263XHDGM ratio 272. Wonder if they have problem with all cases or certain models. Hopefully some one can shine light on this. While the truck is in shop it seem i need to replace metal brake line above gas tank as it has rusted. So may want to check yalls before it fails. Cost of tranfer case installed is $2600 through Jasper and GM dealership.

Why not just buy a good used one? Install a "case saver", keep if full of fluid & change it often. $2600 is alot of bread to just throw your hands up & sell it. I too have fixed trucks....then sold them...Then hear 5 years later that the truck has had NO problems |

Re: Transfer case noise???
I thought of buying a used one but it maybe damaged as well plus there are none for sale locally and have to wait a week to get one from another area or state. It seems to me after doing research and talking to people that this is a common problem. It also give me a reason to upgrade to a diesel.

The 01-04 LB7 Duramax have really bad injector issues. Look for a 04.5-07 LLY or LBZ. |

Re: Transfer case noise???
yes i ended up putting a Jasper unit in and sold truck. I priced it out with dealer and other avenues, all were with in $50 bucks. I was very discussed with the problem. I am in the market for a 2011 Dually in which i will get in the next month or so. Thanks for the inquiry!

Re: Transfer case noise???
I just got my Tahoe back today. I took it to my new friends Lorenzo & Justin @ Grease Monkey Transmission in Phoenix, Arizona. They replaced the punctured case( $70 used ) and completely rebuilt the transfer case including a case saver so it won't happen again for $800 with a 12 month 12,000 mile warranty. I Love how smooth it is now and the service was excellent !
