Insight needed for deciding on a gas tank

Decided I'm going with an under bed tank. The dilemma I'm having is, which tank "kit" to go with. The search function works, and I've looked thru at least 4 pages of threads back to 2009. What I've found is, most people who've done the under bed tank have used a bed fill location, and the same majority have fleet side beds. I've got a stepside, so this by itself narrowed the threads to a hand full, and again of those even fewer have done a side fill. There are more threads in the 67-72 section for side fill and stepsides which is good and helpful, but they have the extra light they can hide the filler behind, etc.

Here is what I need help determining; of all the tanks there are a few who offer a side fill such as Boyd's and LMC. LMC limits the side fill to 17 gal and Boyd's says 67-72, not pre-66 (even though frames are the same). What tank fits better, meaning hangs down the least? Which "kit" is more inclusive? I've already had my frame blasted and painted, so I'd prefer not to remove the rear most cross member for installation of any tank (I know, should have thought about this before). Is the spare tire cross member the only one which needs to be removed? Any pictures of side fill for stepsides would be greatly appreciated, including the final routing of the filler neck and filler. I've only got a mild sb 350, and it will be years before moving to fuel injection. With that said, which tank kits don't allow for fuel injection later on, meaning have to buy another tank or complete pickup/pump?

I have a fleet with the Boyd welding tank and very happy with it. I did the bed fill. With pump systems like this one you can go to FI any time in the future no matter who's tank you choose. http://aeromotiveinc.com/phantom-fuel-system/ On think about the tank from Boyd welding is he can put the filler where ever you want it. Just give them a call and they are very helpful.

Thanks PGSigns, I've read on past threads the same thing about Boyd's putting the filler port "where ever" requested. Thanks for the link too, nice set up for a fuel injection pump.

I have a 65 that I am putting a 5.3 LS engine in and have been looking hard at the fuel pump options and what tank setup for that one. So for pumps that is the one I like the best so far.

Hmmm this makes me wonder if Boyds would be able to put the filler in the rear of the tank. That way you could use a fold down license plate bracket to fill like the idea of this one below using a 69 Camaro tank.

Mathew21, now you've just sparked another thought. You're right, if they will put the filler in the rear, and angled like the 67-69 Camaro tank filler, shouldn't that work? The first thing I would wonder about is the angle of the filler and if it would kick off the fill nozzle because of to much fuel at the nozzle from a "flatter" design of a the tank neck.....hmm wonder wonder wonder......

I've got a stepside, and a custom fabbed 16 gal cell in between the rails. If you have a half-decent fab shop near you, its VERY easy to make a simple tank. Its a rectangle, with fittings welded to it. (if you considered anything like fuel injection, it makes life easier there too).

As for the filler port, I just did a hide-away under my syn-wood bed floor. There are better pics somewhere in my build. Battery and filler have access through the bed floor. Filler port is under a flip-up, battery has a removeable lid.

Give Boyds a call they can customize a tank with wherever you want to have the filler. Also their 67 tank fits in our earlier trucks.

I'm just replacing the wood from the wheeltubs back with a panel that lifts up so I can access everything. I plan to use a Standard 20 Gallon fuel cell only because I need the larger fittings for the twin turbo setup and its a much cheaper option than using Boyds.

You may have trouble using a flip down plate on our trucks. I looked at it some and once you get over the rear cross member the bed cross sill and tailgate are right there. Not enough room to get any downward angle on the fill pipe.
