Steering column add U-joints question

For a steering column that's 2" off center (cowl to box) where I'd need to add 2 U-joints, would I need to also add a heim on the cut piece between the U-joints? Or would the 2 U-joints act okay together without one?

Re: Steering column add U-joints question

Using a heim joint on an intermediate shaft is common on some R&P installations.

My column and box have a smaller offset than yours and I'm using a double u-joint like this

Re: Steering column add U-joints question

Thanks. I actually saw that same double joint at Speedway Motors and it says it's good to correct up to 1" of offset.

Re: Steering column add U-joints question

I would call Borgeson for advice. They are pretty responsive

Re: Steering column add U-joints question

Just found this on Speedway Motor's site.
I didn't see this before.
It does say if you have MORE than two u-joints though.

Re: Steering column add U-joints question

We used this setup on a lot of drag cars. Where you need a heim for support depends a lot on the setup. Some we did needed it to support the end of the column when the distance between the two u-joints was short like 10 inches or less. Can you post a picture of your setup?

I can, but there's not much to see really. I'm in the process of doing a 2" Z which puts the column shaft 2" off. I haven't cut the shaft yet. I just ordered two weld on U-joints and a 3/4" heim. I just thinking about where to cut. I think if i cut close to the firewall I may be able to avoid notching the upper control arm.
