metal prep for paint

How do you all prep the metal for Epoxy primer? I know media blast is mostly likely best, but if I'm not going that way others as far as done to bare metal? scuff and clean? and clean with just water and soap? or specialty cleaners?

I'm going to start on the interior of my cab and it has some light rust, clean metal and dirt.
My plan is to Epoxy prime and paint the interior and also will be putting Dynamat down also

80 grit paper. Use a D/A where you can.
Clean with waterborne w&g remover.

after sanding I spray the bare metal with Ospho or similar metal prep. wipe off the excess and let it dry. Wipe the body with a degreaser/waxremover and then spray it with primer. I don't ever use water to wash it that only starts rust you can't see

I just used ospho depending rúst surface it turns lightly Black and powdery white. Then i power sand with 80grit, 150 then 220grit. Last i primer.
Note: good preparetion is key. Surface must have ver y lightly rust or none.
Also, you must wait 12hour befo re primer.

Be careful, a lot of epoxies don't like acid.
A lot of money is down the drain if the paint fails down the road. Why take a chance?

Good point. I waited a week before primer.

Its no longer acid once it dries and converts the rust to a phosphate coating also know as Parkerizing when done to a gun barrel.

This is not the same as acid dipping which paint companies do not reccomend

I've been using SPI epoxy for years. Never used another brand.

I explicitly follow their instructions.

It does say Ospho is OK but I've never had a reason to use it.
