painting new parts

Hi - I got an old stepside bed for my truck. in pretty good shape. im gonna do a temporary rustoleum paint job on the bed. i had to buy a new front panel and rear sill..... keeping in mind that im doing a temporary inexpensive paint job for now, can i just scuff up the new parts that have black primer, or do i need to strip that off? i dont want to do un necessary work. i want my temporary paint to hold up reasonably well.

Of course you know you get out of it what you put into it and a rattle can wont get you great results. Anyway you can scuff with a red scotch bright pad to give it some teeth and spray.

Yes , I'm not expecting rustoleum to look like a pro paint job. I want to get the bed on the truck and enjoy it this summer . Just want to spray it with this for now . Will look better than dark red

Temporary, just scuff shoot. I used that same paint and color on a vintage metal student desk I refurbished . I used a whole can on two coats to get a nice even finish, see attached. It will take a lot of cans, I would go to the paint store and get a quart of paint and reducer and use that, will also give you a more even finish.

Good thing the cans are only $3.87 a piece at Home Depot .
I don't mean to sound like an amateur , but what's a reducer ?

Reducer is like a thinner to get it to the right consistency to get it to flow in the paint sprayer.

I know it's not the right color, but the same product. It says it cleans up with mineral spirits, so that could be used as a reducer.

I don't own a sprayer or a compressor . I'm gonna paint the tailgate first and see how it looks. I'll post pics
