Anyone with an original Big Block that has its original Q-Jet?

In short: Original big block carb doesn't clear original big block linkage - phenolic spacer needed?

I was trying to figure out which linkage type my Q-Jet has to buy the right TV bracketry when I realized that the bottom of the linkage had been cut off by the original owner. That's a problem because I cannot attach TV cable linkage to it now, and need to replace it.

Problem is, it will not clear the intake without that modification. I'm wondering if someone has an original big block setup to check it for me.

The only thing I can think of is that perhaps they should have the thick gasket, but it looks like I already do. Maybe I added that and it wasn't there originally so they had to cut the linkage, but now that I've done it right, I can just repair the linkage arm.

I would really appreciate it if someone has an original they could check, compare, maybe post a photo of.

I've put a side view, front view, and a picture of what the linkage should look like before cut.

Also, can I stick a new linkage rod in here without too much agony? Is it basically like replacing the shaft bore bushings?

Many thanks!
Dave

Re: Anyone with an original Big Block that has its original Q-Jet?

Don't want to randomize the thread but the bowl looks a little weepy to me. I just had this rebuilt at Carb Connection in Kirkland, WA, which is supposed to know what they're doing. I tightened the bolts and airhorn screws a little (didn't want to warp it) not sure if that's helped.

No po cut that part of the throttle off. It's factory from a manual tranny carb.

I have an original untouched 396 in a 69 C10. I actually have it sold and it is leaving me tomorrow. I will take some pics of the linkage before she goes and post them in this thread. If you need specific details feel free to ask. The automatic choke had been removed and a manual installed but that is on the other side of the carb.

Re: Anyone with an original Big Block that has its original Q-Jet?

The kick down that was cut off is from a small block carb and th350 setup. I have several bb quads here and correct is without the piece you need for TV cable. You might be better to get base plate from small block put 1/2 inch spacer to clear pancake stock intake and use your correct numbers bowl. Just a thought. Just curious what is part number on your carb? Should be a 7040206. As a side note all 8 of the 7040208 carbs I have look like they were cut so as evident by lack of kick down arm, this is one of ways to tell bb and manual trans carbs from rest- easy visual. As you can see this one still has the kick down lever to engage the th400 carb mounted switch.

Re: Anyone with an original Big Block that has its original Q-Jet?

Mine is indeed a 7040206. I am fairly certain that decodes to 1970 GMC 402 w/ Auto trans. No?

The linkage arm was definitely cut, not cast or stamped that way. If you mean cut from the factory, OK, but it's not a pretty cut.

The original or previous owner also had a bit of a home-brew kickdown with a thicker pad and the switch welded to the vacuum booster pipe. I have NO idea what that was about.

All I care right now is getting one of these mounted, and they implied I cannot do it with this linkage that's been "cut":

Re: Anyone with an original Big Block that has its original Q-Jet?

To get where you need to be with the TV cable, you are going to have locate and change to the different base plate that has a kick down arm on it for a th350. As I said earlier, locate the base that has the kick down arm- any small block carb that was located in front of th350 and keep your correct numbered bowl section and swap bases. The kick down arm will not work with the stock flat 396/402 intake. If you can find a tall runner 396 Camaro intake no need for a spacer, if that is not an option , a 1/2 space is going to be needed to gain the clearance you need to make the 700 r work with your stock set up. I have the bow tie overdrive bracket to install on my 67, but mine will go with a holley and 2004r which is slightly different from the stock setup. I know it requires their special cable bracket, but not sure what all the quad requires beyond the th350 kick down arm provision. To my knowledge all the later carbs that got the overdrive type trans would have been the same base as a carb from one of our trucks that came with a th350. Because the th400 kick down is electric, there was no need for the arm so it was removed to work with the crappy intake that came stock on our bb trucks.

I'm sosorry. I had trouble getting the door open on the truck and then the key didn't want to turn in the ignition and then I had to get my Burb to pull it a few feet back because the rear drive wheel was frozen in ice , and I forgot to get the pictures for you.

Re: Anyone with an original Big Block that has its original Q-Jet?

Interesting coincidence, but the shop that's building the 700R for my 71 big block called today and wanted me to run my truck by and let them look at it to determine which TV cable to order. It will be Monday now, but I will follow up with what happens with mine.
