quick front bumper question - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Hey guys. Did a search and couldn't quite find the answer I was looking for so now I'm here asking and hoping I can get an answer as soon as possible.

I have a deal lined up right now on a front bumper, but it's not off a chevy, but it may be going on my 67 chevy.

What I need to know is the width of a front bumper or the width from outside front passenger fender to outside driver front fender.

I'd measure the fenders myself, but it's way to muddy where my truck is for my wheelchair to get through. I also don't have a front nor rear bumper to measure.

Just measured mine - bumper measures 80" end to end and best I can tell the fenders are 76" apart. This was done with a tape measure while on the truck with my middle-aged eyes so there may be a little "tolerance" in those measurements.

Thanks a ton guys. So if the bumper measures 79 inches wide and the fenders are 76 inches wide, with some fabrication, can 1 1/4 inches be taken off in the middle or so to give the bumper a more snug fit to the fenders which will leave about 1/4 inch gap on each side between the fender and bumper?

I would think that shortening the bumper would cause the mounting holes to be out of alignment. You'd have to fill those and drill new ones.

You got a point there. Maybe take the 1 1/4 inches out on each side of the bumper on the outside of the bolts. Not sure how close the bolts are to the ends of the bumper though.

You can weld studs on the inside of the bumper....nice and clean

Step-Ed that's a real good idea. Never thought of that. I may just do that as the bumper I may be getting is off a totally different truck and the mounts are a lot different.

As for narrowing the bumper, I was a bit side tracked on that idea. The bumper I'm looking to get measures 75" overall width (or length) and about 73" from inside edge to inside edge. So it's a tad short for our trucks, but I can stretch it to fit. I guess narrowing and stretching a bumper can fall under the same catagory as with doing either, the bolt holes will be in different locations than stock.

But as Step-Ed mentioned, welding studs to the back would make it a lot easier in my case as I would then be able to use either stock bumper brackets or make some and give me more of an option on where the studs can go. Plus it will give it more cleaner of a look, that is if you don't really like seeing the bolts.

If the bumper is not originally off one of these trucks. The curve or roundedness of the bumper may not look right on these trucks. I have seen some flat straight off-road bumpers that look ok, but a bumper with a different curve to it may look weird.

I've thought long and hard about using a different style bumper. I did tons of research to find a bumper that is really close to the same curve and overall design of the bumpers for our trucks. I finally found one local after a couple months of calling around to different salvage yards in my area and surrounding states. I may get it and see what it will look like before I try to stretch it. If I don't like it, no biggie. I can re-sell it or scrap it.

I took an inch and a half off each side /welded studs into holes

I am not sure if I am going to paint it the color truck or have it chromed . Leaning towards the color of truck which will be gunmetal grey.
