What Fuel Pump for 350?

The block is a 4 bolt 1978 350.
I need to know what mechanical Fuel Pump I need and if I need the rod to the crank on this engine. I know I need a 6 to 8 psi for the 750 carb.


This came Last Night UPS sure looks nice.

Anything with a 6-8 psi. rating will work, you just have to decide if you want to retain your return system as pumps are offered both ways. This is what I went with:

You will need the pushrod to go between the cam and fuel pump if you use an engine mounted mechanical pump. You will also need the plate that goes between the pump and the block if you do not currently have it.

Quick Fuel.com said the 750 Slayer Carb needs a 6.5 PSI fuel pump for best results. I was wondering If It would be better converting it over to a Electric Fuel pump (for adjustability) or would It be too much trouble.

I know it's not a performance part, but I've had success with AC/Delco pumps like this: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/ado-40725/overview/ and this: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/ado-40987/overview/

I also had a really nice AC/Delco pump with 1/4" NPT ports that was "clockable" meaning you could rotate it for the best fit. Wish I could find that P/N. Edit: Found it: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/nal-6415325
According to Summit Racing, fuel pressure required for a naturally aspirated 400hp engine = 400 x 0.5 / 6 = 33.3, so this pump's 30 GPH rating would right on the edge at full throttle for any length of time.

The less expensive pumps in the links above have a 5/16" input nipple with inverted flare output. But, hey one of those worked great on a 5,800 RPM 383, but probably wouldn't support that RPM for very long.

Can you tell by this photo what size lines are these? I know that the metal line is the one to the carb.

I can't find anyone in my remote area that will do a engine swap for under a $1000.00 seams a little high for as clean it is under the Hood.
There Is no smog stuff anymore and the engine was swapped 20,000 miles ago.

If you are paying someone to do the work, have the right tools and hook up all the new parts like your carb with all the proper plumbing that is not a bad price. it is only 20 hours of work at 50.00 dollars an hour. Many shops can charge even more per hour or extra for custom work. Doing it yourself will save you money, and you can put that money towards your tools. As well as learning how to do the job right. As you have posted here you have received a lot of good advice on how to do things the Right way. If you have the time and place to do it you will be much more satisfied when you are done.

The following build has info on performance GM fuel pump: "1986 Chevy C10 SWB Step Side". My build and really like this pump for street driven and reliabile: 400 H.P. and 400 Ft-Lbs torque, in a 350 engine.

Fuel pump info, it is a GM high performance unit, I think around 1964 or 1965 was the first year these were used on 365 and 375 H.P. 327 engines. The casting is a little different then the 1965 unit.

"Can be used on all Chevrolet 283-400ci V8 engines. Pump has 7 psi shutoff pressure, 3/8-18 inlet and outlet ports and has a free flow rating of 110 gallons per hour. Technical Notes: 6.5 to 8 psi at 1800 rpm

Photo of fuel pump, like mentioned above, the inlet and outlet positions on this pump are clock able. Really like this pump, use it on lots of engines, however, did have issue with this particular pump, in that, the pin that connects inside components which makes it pump, was not connected. Easy fix, to take apart, and insert pin where needed to make it pump fuel.

Note: above build also shows the tools I used to make fuel lines, just a little practice on scrap fuel line making bends, and you can do it too. Good tools really make the process much easier!!

Not trying to soap box here, as others here have said many time, rubber fuel lines can be a real fire hazard, I only use metal line, just sharing a little bit of knowledge, to hopefully keep us safe.

Line to carb is probably 5/16" tube with flared end.

One of the nipples fits 5/16" hose, but the other looks to be for 3/8" hose. I honestly don't know what the second hose is for. Guess that's because my 82 C10 is the latest year model project vehicle I've owned!

That looks like the same pump that's on my 77. It has:

3/8" barb for the inlet hose that connects to the 3/8" feed line running along the frame.
1/4" barb for the return hose that connects to the 1/4" return line running along the frame. The return line is used with certain engines to help prevent vapor lock.
5/8"-18 inverted flare connection for 3/8" steel line that goes to the carburetor.
