Internal differences Vortec 5.7 and standard 5.7
What's the difference in an 86-95 1-piece RMS crankshaft and a 96-99 5.7 Vortec crankshaft? Or is there any? How does the crank reluctor for the position sensor attach to the crank?
How about the wrist pins and pistons? I know the cam and lifters are roller block or non-roller block specific. Reason I'm asking is because a spare engine of mine developed a pretty bad knock and I need to know what year ranges I can search for when it comes to parts.

Everything is the same. Reluctor is a ring that slips over the crank snout.

Cool, thanks. Now to see if I can actually punch out a vortec 350 about 40 over and see if it still runs right...

Re: Internal differences Vortec 5.7 and standard 5.7
Guess you never saw this
http://www.chevrolet.com/performance...k+crate+engine There are some that say it will never run right without retuning the PCM. Retailers go both ways. Notice GM says it does NOT need reprogramming. But there is this note at the bottom. "Performance recalibration of engine control unit (ECU) will significantly increase torque and horsepower." Not a problem. PCMForless in NC can reprogram the PCM. They did 2 different PCM's for me. If you do anything to a Vortec if you haven't already done them. These 3 things are a must. Get rid of the OEM plastic distributor. 1) http://www.summitracing.com/parts/su...et/model/k1500 Replace the terrible CSF Injectors with this. 2) http://www.summitracing.com/parts/sm...98/model/k1500 Get rid of the plastic intake gaskets from the factory and use these metal ones. 3) http://www.summitracing.com/parts/fel-ms98000t Last edited by speedygonzales; 02-05-2015 at 07:47 AM. |

Nope, never saw that. And for some reason I can't find the "search" function anymore on this site, so I figured I would just ask in a thread.
I do plan on doing the MPFI conversion, and I didn't know they made a non-plastic distributor. Thanks for the heads up on those.

It will be just fine, that only like 6 extra cubes.
