Tub Removal

Looking for ideas on how to remove the tub from my 72 2wd. Started out just doing a simple bag job. Rear end and trailing arms are off, no motor or trans, no front clip, no upper or lower control arms. Top is still on to retain integrity. It is in my garage so I am really limited on space to move things around. Right now it is on jack stands. Now that Porterbuilt is available I am going to do a stage 2 front and rear. Problem is got to get that frame out from under that tub to do any work.

Re: Tub Removal

Call up some buddies and have them help you lift it off.

Question Re: Tub Removal

Thought about that. The problem is lack of room and my driveway is pretty steep. I think if I can get the tub and frame up high enough to build a frame (even thought about temporarily using cinder blocks) then dropping the frame down. Since it doesn't have any wheels I will have to build some kind of dolly to move it from under the tub, then go back and build a dolly for the tub. I know it seems like a lot of extra work. Not sure about how heavy the tub with the top on is, but I am sure it would take quite a few guys to pick it up and then it move it. Need to be really creative. Anybody have pics of dollies the used ?

Re: Tub Removal

I admire you guys that undertake a project of this magnitude with limited room and equipment. A frame off project is big even with the stuff to do it.
With much patience and safety considerations you can manage to do it.

Me.............I like to make it easier...

Re: Tub Removal

Yea, wish I had a lift. Told my wife I wasn't moving again unless I have a separate garage and it has to be big enough to put a lift in. Ill get it off the frame, it will just take some work and a lot of moving jacks around.

Re: Tub Removal

I've seen guys use some cinder blocks and 4x4s to get it off. Just use a jack to lift it and stack the blocks till you get up high enough. Works good and a lot cheaper than a lift if you can't get one.

Re: Tub Removal

There's a post on here by VTBlazer and he used a cherry picker and chains to lift the tub with top off the frame. He had the frame on dolly/skates to move the frame out from under the tub, then lower the tub onto whatever cart you make for it. Search and you'll find it.

I personally used about 8-10 people to lift my body off (w/o top) and had the frame rolled out and the cart rolled in.

Re: Tub Removal

Believe it or not, this was a one man frame off. (Sorry for the quality of 1st pic...camera phone...but it showed the entire set up better than anything else I had). Cherry picker and floor jack and patience. Slowly go up in small increments with 2x4s then blocks...roll out the chassis. Just take your time. Reverse the process to put it back together.

Re: Tub Removal

Thanks IRONCANINE for the pics. Thats exactly what I was planning. Just nice to know someone else has been there before and it actually will work. And my wife thought I was crazy.
