Re: axles
All this BS bout swapping 1/2 ton IFS to 3/4 IFS, why not just do an SAS? Build it once and never mess with it again, it will outlast the best built IFS front.

Re: axles
It's only BS if what the OP was after going that route. Some people want the better ride while having a better ride. It also depends on the uses off road and whether closer to stock or going modified. In stock form,an IFS has better articulation, therefore better traction that a solid axle. Build it once and that's it? how does that work? I've always had to maintain any moving parts on any mechanical component. My '92 K3500 went 335,000 miles on all original front end except idler arm every 80k or so. Cheap easy fix. I've never gotten that out of the many solid axle 4wds I've had. Dana 60 king pins last forever?

Re: axles
I kinda like a smooth ride without a death wobble or rattling the fillings out of my teeth!
If I were going to hardcore mud or rock crawl, SFA would be the way to go. For added traction when I need it on the street or light off-road, IFS is it for me. |

Re: axles
Done right an SAS can ride just as good as an IFS. How much does it cost to rebuild an IFS front? What about a solid axle? Don't always have to use a 60, I'm gonna be using a 44. Maintenance plays a huge role in either set up. Don't do anything to them and after a while something is bound to go. I don't agree that an IFS articulates better than SAS, if so why do so many off roaders do and SAS? One for strength, but two for articulation.

Re: axles
I said in stock form. You have to modify a leaf front end to articulate more, the IFS is self-limited. That is why off roaders go with solid axle. But a solid axle rig set up for big articulation isn't what I would want to drive on the road. I like the flat cornering feel of a not so flexy 4wd and hate front end pitch and body roll on the street. Why are Humvees independent all around? The military does more R & D than anywhere else and they do nothing from a marketing/gimmick stand point. Yet, any design with benefits for the general public finds it's way into commercial development. An IFS takes way more twist to raise a rear tire. A tire off the ground is worthless in an open rear. There's what's ultimately best for various situations. We are given the luxury of choice to fit our individual needs. There is no such thing as only one "best"
