Re: 1972-4x4 light
Late model NP205s had a switch in the outer detent spring/ball setup rather than just a plug, spring and ball. You may be able to still find one for an 86+ 1-ton, maybe others.
Google says GM P/N 15594176 https://www.google.com/?gws_rd=ssl#q...+detent+switch |

Re: 1972-4x4 light
205's are usually loud enough when in 4x4 that you have no problem knowing... And on mine, the bumpsteer will clue you in pretty quick!

Re: 1972-4x4 light
Why do you get more bump steer in 4WD?

Just go around the corner in 4x, you'll understand.

Re: 1972-4x4 light
Because, in these 4x4's, the drag link moves in an arc as the suspension goes up and down. Since it's connected to the steering box it moves the steering wheel back and forth

Re: 1972-4x4 light
Mine makes no noise at all when in 4x4. You usually find out when trying to turn a corner

Search for this in 67-72 Tech Tips "67-72 New use for the empty slot in a tach cluster"
An interesting lighting option to your idea. Bruce |

Re: 1972-4x4 light
Too bad the only switch I can find is $100. Maybe I should look at a Dodge application. Did they have a light?

Re: 1972-4x4 light
Mike C claims that you can tell by the bump steer whether or not it's in 4WD. I understand why there's bump steer, just not why being in 4WD would change it.

Re: 1972-4x4 light
I guess he's saying you can't help but notice when 4wd is engaged by the many ways you feel the difference of the front wheels being engaged. I guess the most likely time you'll be in 4wd when you didn't intend to is when it was left in the last time you drove. It doesn't take long to notice, if roads are clear. I routinely put it back in 2HI before I get out. I often need 4wd just to back up my driveway. Even in my '92 with a graphic display on the console I would pull out and wonder why the truck felt funny, then look down at graphic and DOH! Never got far w/o realizing.

Re: 1972-4x4 light
Heh, I didn't check the switch price. $100 would hurt.
A cheaper route might be a weatherproof limit switch on the shift linkage. |

Re: 1972-4x4 light
Yeah, it's pretty difficult to drive for any length of time in 4WD without knowing it. Everything feels different.
