Rear Axle Seal

Hello, I've searched the site but I'm still looking for a little advice because I'm a bit confused.

I'm a proud but sometimes frustrated owner of a 70 GMC Grand Sierra 3/4 Ton truck.

It looks like I need to replace my rear axle seal. Apparently I'm looking for a lock screw so I can remove the pinion shaft from my differential. I can't seem to locate that screw. Also, because it appears my rear axle is different from those I've seen I thought there might be a different procedure for removal.

Any help is appreciated, the gear is labeled Dana 32503 A808 46-13 (if someone could also help me identify the rear end type). Thanks - Earl

Re: Rear Axle Seal

Remove the 8 bolts on the end of the axle at the hub and the axle should slide right out. Then you have to remove the hub off of the axle spindle to get to the seal.

The lock bolt you've been searching for to release the pin is for a C-clip style axle like a 12-bolt.

Dana 60 with a powerloc

The axle seal is in the hub. Once you remove the axle it helps to have the correct socket to remove the hub

Re: Rear Axle Seal

Thank you both - I pulled out the axle after reading Gary's response and tried getting it off with a set of channel locks but if I measured right I'll need to grab a 2 3/8" socket. BigDav160 thanks for the ID on the diff - now I can grab the parts tomorrow and maybe get this done this weekend.

Re: Rear Axle Seal

You lucky dog. The PowerLock is probably the best limited slip differential ever made. Completely rebuildable and adjustable. Make sure you add some limited slip additive when you refill the differential housing.

As mentioned above, you have a Dana 60. Yours has 3.54 gears (46/13=3.538)

Sweet. I have accumulated a whole bunch of very large sockets and specialty sockets from different diffs over the years. D60's, front D44's, 14-bolt FF's 14-bolt SF's, etc., etc... Some have only been used once by me but borrowed by a lot of buddies over the decades.
