WHOOP. WHOOP.
Yeah! Got my drop spring kit this mornin.
Stuff looks really good quality, and the welds look good too. Even comes with energy suspension bushing lube. Im gonna take some measurements and see how much would be involved in reverse engineering these brackets for my 69. Might be cost efficient to just buy another kit. Oh, the spring cups arent part of the kit, I got those separate cause mine were paper thin and no way I could make those contours without a press and tons of time. I cant make em for $9 a piece.

Now I gotta finish welding the tubes on the 9", get the saddles off the other rear end, and put it together. Then, set the pinion angle, tack it off, pull it all apart weld it up, paint it, then reassemble. Dam.

What a weekend!!
Hot rod Friday turned into hot rod Saturday,and hot rod Sunday.
But, I finally got a roller again. Early Classic has a great kit, and I dont think the price could be beat. I COULD make these parts, but why? I didnt know they would come powder coated, those guys thought of everything.
I really am the worst at takin pictures,cause I got so into what I was doin I didnt take any until I was almost done.
So, heres what o got when I finally hung the 9"...

Then I got to putting everything together,and found out my brake backin plates were on backwards. Yeah, AFTER I got the axles in and bolted up, then found that the e-brake cables from the twelve bolt are too long for the 9".(I had to try...) Too long as in, from the backing plate to the arm the 9" doesnt have room for the chevys cable.
But, I havent looked into what I can do to use the stock cables, and still have an e-brake.

Well, I think its up for debate. Other than the fact that I already had a perfect front clip, with new calipers, rotors and pads, new motor mounts, massive Z28 sway bar, and centerline wheels with decent tires that matched the wheels I had for the 9". The 454 headers wouldn't work in the truck frame, and I just got them last summer. Didnt want to get another set. The camaro gave me a 7" drop up front, and with the 5" in the rear, its still got a little rake in it.
I read somewhere that the steering box has a close ratio gear, but I havent figured out how to verify that.
As I posted before, this was only in MY best interest to use the camaro.
When I do the 69, im using all truck parts. I found a 72 that im using for that build.

I'm prematurely setting the cab right now cause I gotta get it out of the weather. Been strippin the dash, and getting it ready for prefab work, and sealing, then some paint to preserve for now.
The wire harness is totally unmolested, lucked out there, and the rust is minimal.

The engine is gonna be sitting low in the bay, but I got plenty of room.
Also, the throttle lever is goin to need some lengthening at the rod to bring the pin to the carb.
The steering column will also need some re-engineering, and I still gotta find power steering pump brackets for the v- belt system.

Im building this truck my way cause its what I have to work with. I dont have any money to just throw at this truck to build it back to show quality. That's not what I want anyway. I will be following along with your build too. I am also not afraid of a little slice and dice here and there. I put that same clip under a 41 Chevy coupe years ago and she handled great.
This approach was common years ago before Alston, Porterbuilt, etc. started manufacturing such great products. You used what was available to make what you had better.
I adhere to the policy of "your truck, do what you want".
I'm right dead in the middle of building a 1 ton, dually, short, stepside. So yeah, I get it. Took 60" of length out of my frame.
Keep up the good work. I love to see progress.

Trucks are so much cooler, but you cant argue with the Z28 package. Just plice em together, fill in the gaps, make it strong, make it look cool.
Im fitting in some 1"x1" angle in the door threshold. Im really just "quick", fixin it so I can get it done. Rust aint to bad, so im patchin.
I want this one outta here so I can bring in the 69, its smaller so ill have more room to work. I had to take the bumper off the rear to get the whole frame in the garage.

Well, I got a little carried away with the cleaning and rust treatment.
I have a bottle of de-ruster, phosphoric acid, and I found a sprayer lid for it. I also found some paint I had leftover from a job last year.
The bottle says spray it and wait minimum one hour, if real bad repeat. So, it takes rist, some kind of chemical reaction happens where ferric oxide is converted to iron phosphate. Cool.
I sprayed it down until it was dripping and let it sit overnight.

This was twenty minutes after I sprayed it. Soaked and the rust was turning black. (Good)

This paint is Devoe speedenamel 4318.
Once the sealer/converter dried I could paint it. This paint was thick heavy stuff, says not for roller use. So, I basically sealed my truck with industrial chemicals.
Took some 1"x1"x 1/8" angle, slit one side so I could get the seal radius bent before I install it.

Thats the driver side, now gotta do pass side.
Outer rockers are next, only a few small patches needed and cab corners, then I can start bringin in the inner fenders, and the outer.
