Trucks with rear disc brakes

For all of you all with rear disc brakes, how many of you are using an e-brake? I am in the process of smoothing my firewall and trying to decide to keep or not to keep the e-brake. I can't remember the last time I used mine in any of the trucks I have had in the past. Just wondering and looking for input.

Re: Trucks with rear disc brakes

Bag it and set the truck on the ground

Some caliper set ups have parking brakes built into them.

I guess I was looking for a "poll" to see how many leave the brake intact.

Re: Trucks with rear disc brakes

If your state inspects cars a working parking brake is on the list.

Leave it if possible...just adds that bit of comfort when leaving it running while not inside of it....

I guess it is better to have it and not need it than need it and not thanks for the input.

Re: Trucks with rear disc brakes

I had a set up from a C5 vette with the drum in hat style parking brake that we adapted to the stock truck 12 bolt rear end. Worked well and passed the state inspection.

Re: Trucks with rear disc brakes

Look thru the link to Sunburn in my sig. I used some brackets I bought from a forum member, but I do not think he has anymore right now.

Re: Trucks with rear disc brakes

I used '97 Camaro z28 rear calipers that have a parking brake on my '69 (it has a 5 speed) - they just have a pull that locks down the caliper. I had to modify a set of factory parking brake cables to hook it up to the eStopp electric parking brake I'm using. I kept my ebrake AND smoothed the firewall.

Re: Trucks with rear disc brakes

I use the Parking Brake in my daily driver all the time. I don't like the BANG when I shift into gear when parked on an incline. Not to mention it gives me some piece of mind when hooked to a trailer or loaded up.

On my project truck I have a 5 speed transmission. I'm using a caliper/bracket assembly I scavenged from an 03 van because I wanted something with a parking brake.

The setup is disc brake with internal drum&shoes. It can be used on 6 and 8 lug trucks.

To quote the immortal Mitch Hedberg. "The Emergency, 'make the car smell funny' lever"

I cut all the cables and removed the handle that made up my drum emergency brake setup, and ditched it entirely. I have an automatic, so I just put it in park.

Re: Trucks with rear disc brakes

I think I am going to keep them and use the kit from Toms on ebay. The problem I was finding is that part store calipers didn't have the "clips" to hook up the cable. Toms appears to be complete. anyone used his kit? yea or nay?

Thanks for all of the replies.

Re: Trucks with rear disc brakes

I'm using Tom's kit on my 56 truck rear end (67 Camaro 12bolt)
The kit was good and you get most everything but the instructions are lame at best. As long as you are experienced in suspension and brake work you will know about residual valves and using a disc brake master cylinder and related parts needed. They don't supply nor do they tell you what else is required to complete the kit, you are just getting those parts pictured...
BTW the rear calipers are 80 Cadillac Seville rear calipers, he reason I know is I received 2 driver sides instead of a passenger side. I had to exchange it locally.
All in all its on and works as expected....here are some pictures...good luck

Re: Trucks with rear disc brakes

In New York State we need to have emergency brakes. On my new build I'm planning to shave my firewall and do not plan to use the stock pedal E-brake. I'm planning to use the E-Stopp set up. Got good reviews. Check it out.

Re: Trucks with rear disc brakes

I should mention, Hydraulic ebrakes are freakin AWESOME once you've used one....but they don't work quite the same.

Wink Re: Trucks with rear disc brakes

I bought the kit that uses the e brake. I like knowing it is working. I live on a hill so I use it all the time. I have caught 2 vehicles running down the drive way so far in 20 years living where I do.

Get out and drive the truck this summer and have some fun!
It sucks not being able to hear!

LWB trucks rule, if you don't think so measure your SWB!
After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.
