Re: what exhaust are you running?
I notice a few of you are going big pipe into muffler and then scaling down after; is there a reason for this?
Also, I have had FM's give drone, and some that didn't. Would placement help with this? If you had your mufflers as far back as possible, just before the pipe turns to go up and over the rear axle, so the mufflers are not directly under the cab. I have a crew that needs exhaust and was planning on going with FM's...

Re: what exhaust are you running?
It won't be that loud. There will be some drone, mostly at 40 mph constant speed. I have FM 40s on my DD, and it doesn't bother me at all.

Re: what exhaust are you running?
Just picked it up. Sounds pretty good. Quiet at idle and not super loud while driving. Sounds good.

Re: what exhaust are you running?
Flow/sound related for me. I wanted minimal flow restrictions leaving the motor & through the mufflers. After the mufflers the exhaust pressure drops so downsizing pipe size doesn't impact flow & it helps reduce the noise level.

Re: what exhaust are you running?
I guess. They were the all-time cheapest mufflers my local parts house sold. They might be walkers, but I'm not sure. They are not a "performance" muffler per se, just oem replacement for something.

$325. True duals with turn downs right in front of the axle.

Re: what exhaust are you running?
I have a mild 350 with pypes race pro mufflers with 2 1/2 in tubes running all the way out the back then turned down at the rear wheels on my 85 and they are nice sounding. No drone at all and they are nice at crusing speed, but sound mean when you get on it.

Re: what exhaust are you running?
Much of the exhaust energy is given up in the mufflers, meaning a smaller pipe can be used after the mufflers with no loss of power. Very common for car and truck mfrs to do this.

Re: what exhaust are you running?
I've got two trucks with Flowmaster 40's on them. One is a big block with 3 inch pipes to the mufflers and 2.5 out, while the small block truck has 2.25 pipes. Neither drone, but I think it's just because both of them are geared fairly steep.
Surprised nobody had mentioned Hooker Aerochambers yet, I love them. They produce a very muscular sound without being too loud, especially at idle. I've run them on a 305 with 2.25 pipes as well as a 454 with 3 inch pipes that end before the axle, absolutely love them.

Re: what exhaust are you running?
Maybe this is a subject for a different thread, but the first set of FM's I bought were put on a '70 Buick GS 350 in about '89.
They had a cool sounding idle, but when you got on it, they seemed to get quieter as the RPM went up. I thought that was part of their sales pitch too? Now it seems they (and just about anything else I have heard?) get a raspy sound as you get into it, like glass packs?
