New intake/carb on my 86 Silverado
Spent all day Sunday swapping out my old crusty heavy iron intake and the crappy computer controlled quadrajet and distributor on my truck for an Edelbrock Performer EPS and Performer carb that I rebuilt and added an electric choke to, and swapped out distributors. Still have to put the new cap, wires, and plugs on. Didn't have enough time to take care of that. So far she seems to be running ok. I need to tune it a little but the weather turned to crap so I will just drive it for now. Overall everything went well. No hiccups or surprises. The adapter bracket for the cruise control was basically idiot-proof, which was good because it didn't come with directions!

More pics. One downfall of the cruise control adapter bracket is that my air cleaner was hitting it. I replaced it with a cheap one for now but I'll figure something out later. The auto store was closing and it was only $25-30

Re: New intake/carb on my 86 Silverado
You found a shroud! I'll have to put mine back into storage.
You would be better off with the thermac air cleaner on there, to get some preheat air when it's cold. Then run a cold-air induction duct to the radiator bulkhead. I just replaced my make-do dryer-duct cold-air induction tube with a reproduction duct, which I could not find before. And I have the tuning parameters for the Edelbrock on a 350, close enough anyway.

Re: New intake/carb on my 86 Silverado
Rich, this is my winter vehicle, an 86 4x4 Silverado, not my 79 C10 Silverado that you've seen. She is in storage for the winter. And she is still missing a shroud! Haha
I know I'd be better off with the original air cleaner, that's why I just threw on the cheap Mr. Gasket air cleaner until I can figure out how to make a factory air cleaner clear the adapter bracket on the carb. I could use a spacer but my factory air cleaner was the 6" tall one that came with the charcoal filter in it. I have an older one that I can clean up and add a spacer to without running into hood clearance issues so I might try that when I get the time. As for carb tuning, we should go for a ride sometime when the weather gets a little better and see what she needs.

With that model of truck, you have room for a 4" tall filter in that chrome air cleaner and then make sure that your PCV is connected to the bottom for a clean install. I am running a K&N 4" filter on my truck and then I added a K&N filter lid to increase the air flow capabilities for my 383 stroker engine on my 84 GMC. I also put the same setup on my son's truck.

Re: New intake/carb on my 86 Silverado
Thanks Jake. Did you notice two of the push rods were cleaner than everything else?? A couple months ago I had to replace two bent pushrods and I swapped all of the rockers with self-aligning rockers because those two, along with every single exhaust valve rocker, was offset, either slightly or severely. Unfortunately it is very likely that one of my cam lobes is wiped out (Look at the picture of where the pushrod was grinding through the rocker!). On the upside, I fixed the problem before things got really bad, I ripped all of the SMOG equipment off the motor, and I found out that this engine has a set of World Products S/R Torquer cylinder heads on it! They are good for about 30-40 HP over stock. That's part of why I felt the need to put on a better breathing intake to help keep up with the increased flow of the S/R heads. Next step this spring is exhaust.

I put a 3/4" spacer ring between the Edelbrock and the thermac to get clearance. Wasn't the tall thermac, though.

Re: New intake/carb on my 86 Silverado
Gotcha. I was gonna throw it on the shelf in case of an emergency but to be honest... it will probably just collect dust if I do that. If you really want it PM me and we can talk. It was working perfectly fine when I pulled it, electric choke, kickdown, everything. It was just running rich after I pulled the smog equipment off and I was getting 10 mpg, and my truck has 3.08's in it...
