Battery overcharging
Hey All-
I've got a 72 3/4 ton longhorn with a 402 in it. The battery is overcharging. It's at 13.25 volts with the engine off and goes up to about 15 volts with the engine running. The alternator and voltage regulator are stock. I've had the truck for 6 months and haven't messed with the charging system. I installed an electric fan that pulls about 25 amps. Today I let the truck idle for about 10 minutes and it wouldn't start for about 1/2 hour then started. I have the stock exhaust manifolds on the truck. The windshield wiper motor was working before it wouldn't start, then it quit on me. Any ideas on whats going on? Is it worth going to a one wire alternator or an internally regulated alt?

um there is a gap adjustment you can do in the voltage regulator to raize or lower the voltage in your charging system

Welcome to the board from another longhorn owner.
The first thig we need you to do is post pics of your rig if you can...longhorns rock. Time for a shameless plug...Don't forget to look over my Longhorn Website, link is in my signiture. IMO, I would chuck that alt and regulator in the garbage, and get a later model stock internally regulated alt. Next to the HEI swap, it is the best thing I did on my trucks. |
