72 c20 rear end swap

Hey guys glad to see everyone on here supporting one another.
So I'm going to pose a question and see what turns up.
I've got a 72 c20 350/350 long box and having some trouble finding parts so I think it would be easier to swap out the whole rear end all together. My question is would a newer rear end from a 2500 work?and if so witch one? Looking for one with disc brakes but not unwilling to put on drums. Thanks ahead of time.

Re: 72 c20 rear end swap

Are you looking for a direct swap with no modification to hangers, springs, etc.?

Yes just something that will basically bolt on.

Re: 72 c20 rear end swap

I could be wrong, but I think after 72, all the springs got longer in the rear. You would either have to hang the new axle off your springs & move shock mounts, or move your spring hangers & possibly shock mounts on your frame if you use the new shock location & spring length on the new axle. There's also spring width and spring to spring width (Where they are on the axle in relation to your frame). That shouldn't be an issue between most years.

The short of it: Probably not, but you could whip out your tape measure and see what you can find. You certainly won't find a leaf spring that short off a newer 3/4 ton with rear disc brakes.
