67-72 frame, Dana 60 front axle... which variation?

'72 Chevy 3/4 ton frame, long bed

14 Bolt full float, cab and chassis rear end

8x6.5 budds

I'm trying to decide what front axle to run, and get it bought this winter. So come Spring, I'll have something fun to do. Have a nice rolling chassis.

The truck is going to be a street machine. POSSIBLE plow use. Lowered, or at least leveled. Nothing crazy.

I know my rear axle will bolt right in, aside from relocating a shock. I would like the same to happen on the front...

Does it matter what Dana 60 I buy for the front? There's so many different variations and things to consider though. Kingpin or balljoints. Different steering setups. Gearing. Old or new. GM, Dodge, Ford, IHC.

Chevy spring perches are all 32" wide, the rest are all bigger - so I'd have to find a Chevy one. And obviously will need one from a dually. Lug pattern should all be 8x6.5, until the newer axles.

From what I have searched on the forum and read online elsewhere, it looks like any Chevy Dana 60 front dually will bolt right up. Is that right?

The GM 77-91 dana 60 only came with king pins. The 1st gen dodge will work as well with a few changes like wheel studs and shock mounts.

You know this! The 81-93, a facelift (barely) of the 72-80 trucks.
First generation comes from the fact this was the first bodystyle Dodge pickup to have the Cummins 5.9 diesel in 1989. Guess if you lump in the 78-79 Mitsubishi 4.0 diesel it becomes even more true

I believe the spring pads on a Dodge D60 are slightly wider.
If you're not doing heavy duty off roading with 37" or larger tires, keep the D44 and upgrade the guts...

Re: 67-72 frame, Dana 60 front axle... which variation?

I used a mid 70's K 30 Dana 60 in my 72 K 20, bolted in with no mods. rear 14 bolt required different shock mounts

Re: 67-72 frame, Dana 60 front axle... which variation?

The gm dana 60 were 32" center to center , dodge are 32.5" . The dodge is about half the cost as a gm and that's why there a good buy. The 1/2" difference can be made up by off set spring bushings.

It just all depends what you can find and if you need a D60.

Re: 67-72 frame, Dana 60 front axle... which variation?

Chevy/GMC spring centers are 31.5 and the Dodges are 32. Regardless there is a 1/2'' difference between the 2. Not uncommon to bolt in a dodge front end on a chevy 1/4'' per side is not that big a deal unless you have brand new springs, bushings and hangars that make everything really tight

Order. Off road design makes a offset spring bushing kit to fit a dodge axle.

Here is a good read:

I think this thread could be moved to the 4X4 section please.
