Lock-Ring pliers, why is there a notch on one side of the tip
I am not asking about snap-ring pliers, my question is about Lock-ring pliers to be used on external lock-rings that would be in place on the end of a splined shaft.
The tips are knurled, and while one side is a flat jaw the opposite is notched. I have always wondered how the notch is to be used. I just picked up a new pair tonight and so once again the question is in my mind. Any answers or wild a** guesses out there ? |

To get snap rings off. Maybe I'm misunderstanding.

Re: Lock-Ring pliers, why is there a notch on one side of the tip
Thanks for your response. I can't really tell by your PIC, but lock-rings do not holes in the ends, they are heavier but very similar to cir-clips
They serve the same function as snap rings but are used in applications where more strength is required, a lot of industrial shafts & gears see their use.Think of snap-rings as light duty and lock-rings as "heavy duty". After using my new pliers last night I believe the notch is for greater visibility when attempting to grasp the ends of the lock-ring. |
