Re: starter burn out

Are you installing the heat shield back onto the starters?

Re: starter burn out

I went threw 3 brand new checker/oreilly auto starters in 3 weeks once. Got my money back finally and bought a remy from Pro, that lasted about 3yrs. I was stuck at the lake when it went out so my only option was another checker auto starter. Its about 2yrs old now and clicks like its arcing something terrible every time I crank but it still works. I use the factory heat shield.

Re: starter burn out

First, make sure your battery cables are in good shape clean the ends on the battery and engine sides. Load test your battery when cold, if it doesn't pass the 15 second load test replace, use 5w-30 oil in winter always.
Low buck starters are not the best choice for reliability. I had 3 of the cheap O'Rielly's starters on my 86 K10 plow truck before I got a premium Napa starter-4 yrs ago after 3 cheap ones in 5 months.
It really sounds like the solinoid is not making full contact and that's usually a low voltage problem. Cheap solinoids are not efficient and have weaker magnetism and a few arcs and they are junk. Napa, Carquest or GM have done best for us.
