BCM problem on 01 suburban?
I bought this suburban a couple months ago for winter duty. Last week I was towing a light trailer and the engine sputtered and died. I coasted into a lot and couldn't get it to restart. It would turn over and barely run for a couple seconds- maybe at 300-400 rpm. I had it towed in and the guy just called and says the BCM is out. I looked it up and it seems that the BCM takes care of lights, horn, etc. They want about 600 to replace/flash it but I'm not certain of their diagnosis. What do you guys think? Thanks Greg

Re: BCM problem on 01 suburban?
Anybody have thoughts on Body Control Modules? Will it cause my truck to not run?

Re: BCM problem on 01 suburban?
That would be the PCM that controls the running of the motor. The bcm is in control of all the stuff that doesn't need a body control module to control really. They have had tons of that stuff for years without it like windows, Door locks, and the lights and although they are on timers witch is pretty cool.
But I digress now back to your problem at hand. Anyways for as long as cars and trucks have had computers on them the people that work on them seem to say [when approached with something wrong with it ] first knee jerk reaction is it is the computer. Now I'll admit I have said this a time or two my self, but that was back in the days of TBI truck when they carried a computer number 1227747. See, I did so many of them I still remember the number from the amounts of trucks I tore down. Then you could unhook the battery and swap those things and it nothing happened go on about your day and look some more. Well if would for me cause I had a stack of parts. Today is different when you have to download the part number in to the tech II and all that just to see and if they are wrong they just shrug it off and hand you a bill anyway. I had that same thing happen several times on a Silverado that has gotten me so upset I am thinking about salvaging it out for the parts. He may be right and I work on cars every day but it just seems far fetched what did the scanner say? If it said the PCM you may want to check into that a little farther but the one under the column [bcm won't make it run bad]But it will cause a problem where it will start and die. But it would have not been out on the road for that it would have been in a shop getting something changed that is VIN locked. [you know how when you change radio's from one truck to another? that is VIN locked and the bcm has to been reprogrammed to allow it to play. Good luck hope I have not confused you more bouncing all over the place like I tend to do sometimes. Jim |

Re: BCM problem on 01 suburban?
Thanks for the reply Hugger. I missed the call from the shop on Friday but I'm assuming they finished it up and I'll be able to get it tomorrow. They promised that I wouldn't be responsible for the charges if it was misdiagnosed but it really didn't make sense to me that the BCM was my problem. I'll know more hopefully tomorrow and I'll be sure to update so it can be noted. Thanks again- Greg

Re: BCM problem on 01 suburban?
I'll go get it in the morning but I just got off the phone with the shop. They said the BCM and theft systems were knocking out the fuel pump to keep it from running. Truckdude nailed it.
Thanks all- Greg |
