Ok I have 67 all original I was fixing to put disk brakes on the front . I have a 5 lug rear setting around . What is the advantages of swapping to 5 lug other than than a few more wheel designs .

Re: 5 lug or 6 lug

Since you can get 6 lug rotors for a disc brake conversion up front... nothing really.

Re: 5 lug or 6 lug

I might be wrong but I think I read some where that rear end in this model truck was a little narrower would this let me put a little wider tire on back . I am planning on doing a 4/6 static drop on it also . That is one reason I was wanting to leave 6 lug unless the the 5 lug was a better set up

Re: 5 lug or 6 lug

Gas pretty much nailed it. Other than a much wider market for wheels, really nothing. I actually like a lowered 6 lug truck, it gives it character. If my frame weren't already five lug id use 6 lug and roll with it. What's the truck look like, out of curiosity.

+1! The pros out weigh the cons anymore...Six lug axles are a dime a dozen...Everybody wants the fives...Rally six lugs are cheaper too...No reason at all to loose the six lug axles and rotors...Plenty of reasons to keep'em though...

Re: 5 lug or 6 lug

back in the day of doing disc brake conversions with factory/junkyard parts,5 lug was your only option...now with aftermarket 6 lug rotors available it beats the heck out of doing an axle swap

And Wheel/Rim choices.
If you are going to run Rallye Wheels, stay with the 6 lug.
But if you plan on running a fancy billet or chrome wheel, you may want to check to be sure that wheel is made in the 5 or 6 lug pattern you plan on running.

I agree with 68shortwide, I also like a lowered 6 lug truck, I think it gives it character.

Re: 5 lug or 6 lug

I like 5 spoke wheels and the way they are made you need 5 lugs (each lug fits in a spoke void). I converted my '69 to 5 lug and used a 72 rear axle. On a stepside truck you are more limited in wheel width/tire size than on a fleetside truck.

To run the wheel and tire combo that I wanted/was willing to pay for I needed to go the 5 lug route. And would do that again. Once nice thing about the 5 lug is if you ever need rotors they are commonly available at any auto parts store and not a special order aftermarket item.

Price was a bout the same since the 5 lug front conversion was $100 cheaper than the 6 lug and I got a 5 lug axle off craigslist for $150 that I swapped my positraction into.

Re: 5 lug or 6 lug

Keep in mind stock 15" drum wheels may not clear disk brake calipers if thats what your intentions are. If yours are 16" it may be ok. Worth asking.

Re: 5 lug or 6 lug

I have deep slotted 15" mag wheels on my truck. It's a 1972 GMC with factory front disc brakes and came stock with 16" wheels. I had to do a little grinding on the calipers to get the mag wheels to fit over them.
