My 69 396 that I recently got and just rebuilt the engine on has a strange oil filter adapter. Also the by pass valve had come apart.

yep the small block unit is the same..as long as the 396 block has the sealing surface for the filter..

FYI... My 69 350 3/4 CST/20 came new with a cartridge type filter. I replaced it in the 70s with an aftermarket adapter and spin-on filter. The filter required with the adapter was actually a Ford part number. Perhaps the 69 396s were in the same boat and someone changed yours out. I THINK the 70s or 71s started using spin-on filters.

I think firstowner69 is right, but I find it confusing to see two oil filter adapters in the same picture, I don't know which one you had on your engine.

How about a picture of the mounting area without the adaptor installed on the 69 396 and tell us which adaptor came off that?

My '69 has the canister or cartridge type filter. I jacked around with the aftermarket spin on adapter for about 1/2 a day putting it on and taking it off 4 or 5 times. Never could get the POS to seal up.

Went back to parts store and got replacement filter and put the OEM back on. I wish you better luck with yours!

Same style came on my W engine. thinking about keeping it, not that far yet. I suppose if it doesn't leak, I'll keep it..
