Fuel vapor canister...

So today while checking the compression on the motor and generally playing with my toys I ended up snapping the plastic line that runs from the vapor canister back to the throttle body. Wasn't hard to do...that thing was brittle. I have searched for the part at all the usual online sources, but since I am not 100% sure what it would be called I am coming up empty. Is it really something that is critical for the engine?....in other words, am I going to do any damage without it?
On the plus side I did find out that the back plug wire was not even remotely seated on the distributor cap...big plus when everything is hooked up as it should be.

Re: Fuel vapor canister...

are you talking about the charcoal canister or evap canister as it may be called? feel under it with your hand if it is like mine it is totally opened on the bottom and you can feel the filter

also what year and model is your rig?

Man....this is the second time today I have forgot to give the stats. It's an 87 Chevy V10 with a 5.7 TBI. The charcoal canister is what I am talking about. I haven't felt underneath it to see if it is open on bottom or not.

Not sure where to source that plastic line but you could possibly repair it with a section of rubber hose until you can find one at a wrecking yard.

That's actually what I was thinking I might do. I have checked everywhere and the part doesn't seem to be something anyone carries. I was thinking that a piece of rubber fuel hose would probably work, but eventually I would like to get the original. Thanks man.

So it's called an A.I.R. pipe? Hmm, never would have come up with that. Twenty bucks for a cheap plastic "pipe"......I think the rubber hose will do til I can find one at a junk yard. Thanks for find that though, I do appreciate it.

Re: Fuel vapor canister...

I've been considering just completely disconnecting mine in my 82.
The lines don't even go to the gas tank anymore anyway. I did finally get around to plugging the lines that I assume went to the tank, before it seems they were just cut and left open and rotting by the PO.

Is there any harm just cutting all ties to the can?
