Trying to I.D. engine block

Can I use the numbers/letters on the front passenger block pad in front of the head to tell what engine it is. Trying to tell if it is a 305 or 350. Engine is not original to the truck. I can't see the stamped numbers on the back of the block to see what it says. The numbers on the pad in front started with a V. I assume that is part of the Plant location and production date. Is the only numbers to identify this in the rear where I can't see.

Try using a smartphone camera to shoot a pic of the casting numbers. I've done it several times when I couldn't see them and it works as long as it's not crudded up.
