Looked at this step side today. What do ya think?

I went today and looked at this 93 step side. It turns out to be a GMC that they have put a Chevy grill, side cab badges and tailgate badging on. It needs both rockers, cab corners and a passenger door. It also has a dent in the cab right behind the passenger door. This use to be a pretty nice truck. Still in good shape just not as good as I thought. I need to see what it is going to cost to have the body work done and blend in some paint. Guy said he couldn't take any less than $2000. It needs a good cleaning inside and out. The rest of the truck is decent with some paint chips and a couple of spots of peeling paint on the rear steps. The wheels and tints are not on the truck anymore just a set of 73-87 style rallies with non matching tires. Maybe just cheaper to find another one that doesn't need body work?

I remember this truck running around town a few years ago and it was a pretty sharp truck with the SS wheels on it. I am wanting to get into this style of short bed. Would prefer a little newer 96-98 or maybe step up to a 99-02 style. I think with some work it would be a nice little driver again just not sure how much money it would take to get all the body work and paint trimmed in to get there.

Are you looking for a real SS or one that just looks like one?

Just looking for a nice little step side preferably. Just something that will make a nice little daily driver. They are kind of hard to find is decent shape around here. If you are talking about a 454 SS then I have no desire for one of those. This one just happened to have the SS wheels on it at one point in time.

I think in '88 they became Sportsides . I think $2k is too much and you should keep looking for one w/o rust

I think you may be into it for more than $2k for body and paint, not worth it.

Kind of what I thought too. I guess I will keep driving my little diesel short bed for a while longer.

I don't look much for deals, they just seem to come up, always something else.

Re: Looked at this step side today. What do ya think?

I'm gonna start buying all the RCSB and ECSB trucks I can find around here. I have 2 shorties with full interiors and very good bodies, paid $750 apiece. Engines are dead, but I didn't want a 4.3L anyway. I figure some new front springs, an aftermarket wiring harness pinned for a 411 PCM, 4L80E and either a small or big block stroker and I'll have trucks I can make good money on. The '88-'98 body style is just coming of age and will be the hot classic before long.
I pity you guys in the rust belt, that kind of damage just isn't something we see much of around here.

Re: Looked at this step side today. What do ya think?

Just like the earlier trucks, around here there are clean ones and rusty ones. At this point it depends on use and care. These aren't so hard to find that anyone should feel they need to buy a rusty one. But check brake and fuel lines, they are known to rust. No big deal, but can be a PIA. If you get a leak, it's best to go ahead and run all new and forget about it.

Re: Looked at this step side today. What do ya think?

I have started looking a little further south. I went Tennessee to get my last 84 short bed and it still had a little bit of rust but mostly surface.

my best advice is write down what you "must" have and don't settle for anything less. keep looking and you will find one.

it took me 6 months of craigslisting to find my 82 2wd K5. it was rust free and clean, and it was a stroke of luck that i even found it!

Re: Looked at this step side today. What do ya think?

I got a ball park figure for about $1500 to put both cab corners, rockers, fixing the dent on the cab and hanging a door and painting all the fixed body work. I would like to have the truck but I am just thinking it is more than I want to put into it with an asking price of $2000. Plus I would have to either find a set of wheels or take a set off my 84.
