Re: power booster

I made my setup (under floor) using a 74 MC and proportioning valve and 8" hot rod booster. On my limited test runs I have found if I hit it hard it locks the tires and will put me thru the windshield. 74 4wd disc/drums for axles and brakes.

Re: power booster

you don't need a power booster, that's more of a preference
some guys here use the stock mc with front discs
though it's a lot safer to use a dual mc

easiest one i've seen is a guy here (my crs prevents me from remembering who) cut off the back of the stock mc
pulled the guts out of the mc and mounted a new mc behind his old mc
then he ran a heim joint from the stock pedal pivot to the new mc, the heim joint ran thru the old mc
this maintains the old pedal and pivot

i on the other hand took the hard way and made a new bracket and pivot to mount the new mc and booster

Re: power booster

what did you end up getting? I ran my dual MC with disc/drum for 15 years without a booster, decided to add one this time.

Re: power booster

If you have power steering, I'd go straight to hydro boost and wouldn't think twice about vacuum.

This. Absolutely. Went Hydroboost in my turbo truck and it was night and day over a large vacuum booster

Re: power booster

A hydroboost unit uses power steering fluid / pressure to amplify brake pedal effort. Most 3/4 ton and larger trucks use them, most diesels as well. The advantages are higher brake line pressure (better brakes), more consistent and firmer brake pedal feel, and you won't lose efficacy by running a very aggressive (low idle vacuum) camshaft.
If it's going to be a while before you put the camaro clip under the truck and you won't have PS in the mean time, I guess a vacuum booster is your best bet for now. I just recommend HB units every time it comes up because I think the results are that much better.

Re: power booster

Chevy Astro/GMC Safari vans had hydroboost systems too if you want to source the parts from U-Pullit.

Re: power booster

Im sorry this may be a dumb question, but you can only run a hydroboost without power steering?

Re: power booster

Y'know, I don't see why you couldn't.
The only problem I can think of is this:
In normal usage, the HB unit gets pressure from the pump. It uses what it needs and sends pressure to the steering box via another high pressure line, as well as a low pressure line back to the PS reservoir.
I don't know for sure what happens when you plumb that high pressure outlet to the reservoir. It might be "foaming, puking mess" or it might be "Totally fine". I mean, the Hydroboost unit can't output more fluid than the pump... so... should be fine?

Try it and report

EDIT: Here's a guy who did it. I haven't really read the link except to verify that he's done what you are asking. Sounds like he is running an a remote reservoir.
